Intention:
When I was watching Tim Burton's Batman the other week, I noticed that the lighting is pretty unique compared to most modern films. I don't know much about lighting techniques or industry terminology, but it seemed to me like the kind of lighting that would look good in black and white. So, inspired by edits like Batman Forever Red Book Edition and The Thing from 1951, I've made The Mystery of the Bat-Man an early 20th century noir thriller centred around the question "Who is the Bat-Man"

Imagining this film as the first introduction of the character to movie going audiences, I've edited the movie to delay the revelation that [ISPOILER]Bruce Wayne is Bat-Man[/ISPOILER] until the last possible second and made an effort to remove any shots that don't look like they would have been possible before Star Wars (though I suspect most of this movie would have been impossible before the 1980s), as well as replacing the Prince songs with some swing hits. I've also lovingly reframed every shot to academy ratio. This isn't just the TV version, I did it all myself! And to top it all off, I've made it black and white with some simulated film damage and aged audio.
Cuts and Additions:
-Reframed every shot to academy ratio
-Removed the title sequence and added an introductory paragraph instead
-Removed all scenes and lines referencing Bruce Wayne as Batman until Vicky Vale finds out
-Removed some special effects scenes that look too advanced for a black and white film
-Replaced both Prince songs with swing hits
-Reconstructed all of the sound effects during the museum song
-Removed the shot of Alicia's face
-Cut a moment of Vale trying to comfort The Joker when he pretends to be melting
-Moved the Wayne murder flashback to when Vale is learning about it
-Changed the ending and completely remade the end credits
-Removed the title sequence and added an introductory paragraph instead

As I write this, I watched this edit the night before. And I quite enjoyed it, especially the flashback parts. I like the noir setting visually and audio wise. A little more of a grain would be cool, but I was happy the way it is. The ending in the batcave kinda threw me off, but maybe I need to rewatch that part again. Overall, superb job!!

This movie was awesome. The black and white gave it a really cool noir vibe and in some parts, it felt like a gothic horror movie.
I would have liked a bit more scratches and pops to give it a grainy old beat up film look, but hey ho.
All around brilliant work and I will perhaps be watching this version more often than the original.

The original Batman '89 had a very retro aesthetic to begin with, so the conversion to black & white was a perfect fit, and the muscial change from the Prince soundtrack to 40's swing classics completed the noir transformation. I've never been a fan of Joker being the murderer of the Waynes nor of the Vicki Vale romance, but it works well in this version of the film. The alternate ending left the film on an unexpectedly poignant note, which I enjoyed. I highly recommend this edit.
