Brief Synopsis:
My take on The Phantom Menace. It's pretty conservative story wise, but very active with regards to pacing and tone. I tried to use the same principles for editing that The Phantom Editor used for 'Attack of the Phantom' (but not the original phantom edit) and that I later used for my Return of the Jedi edit. An emphasis has been made on improved pacing and tone, as well as seamlessness and wanting it to feel like it could have been the original film.
Intention:
There are many great edits of The Phantom Menace out there, and I drew inspiration from many of them. I just felt like I had my own unique take on the presentation of this film.

Editing Details:
I tried to give it the tone and pacing of the original films, but without being ruthless. It is faster, but I was conscious to not make it TOO fast and feel chopped up. Jar-jar is reduced, but is still there enough that his presence makes sense. Dialog is slightly quicker and snappier as is the overall speed of the movie but it was carefully done.
Cuts and Additions:
I didn't keep a detailed cutlist and there was way too many to keep track of, but in general and highlights:
-Dialog is often trimmed to get to the point and be snappier
-Pacing and momentum sped up and heightened
-You never see Gungan City
-You never see Anakin's friends. They all sucked anyway except that one kid. I can't remember his name it started with a K. This was more cut for pacing
-Removed the entire subplot of whether or not Anakin's podracer will work or not and having to get it ready. There's already enough subplot and exposition going on, we don't need another. He said he built it, it's built, there's a brief shot of him tinkering with it while Qui-Gon talks to Shmi on the porch. It's made clear that it malfunctions because of Sebulba's sabotage prior to the race
-No midichlorians. Master, what are midichlorians? Nobody knows
-Not really a ton of other specific things, just tightening and pacing and such. If you've liked my other edits you know what to expect.

Having not seen the original movie in quite some time, I'm primarily comparing this edit to other edits of The Phantom Menace that I've encountered, albeit not many. I'm not a editor, nor am I knowledgeable about editing in general. However, from a layman's perspective, all the cuts were seamless. The only noticeable difference was the lower quality of a deleted scene that was integrated, which is inherent to the scene itself and not a fault of the edit. Although it wouldn't surprise me if someone unaware of the deleted scene failed to notice it, as it appears Possessed has upscaled it.
The standout feature of this edit is undoubtedly its pacing. When I began watching, I hadn't intended to watch the entire edit. Yet, it flew by, and before I knew it, I had watched it in its entirety. The story was clear - all narrative edits only served to improve the original film. Overall, highly recommended!

This edit might as well replace the original for me. I call myself a fan of this movie, yet here the editor managed to cut over 20 minutes and I don't feel like I'm missing anything. The Gungan city was completely cut and I didn't even notice until a while later. My favorite cheesy lines are kept, while the worst dumb moments are cut.
After watching this, I watched it again an hour later because I needed to show it to someone else. It was then that it was pointed out to me that a couple deleted scenes were added, and I noticed the slight drop in quality. That's why the video quality is a 9 and not a 10, but it's nothing too jarring. That's the only thing I can think to mention that's remotely negative. I know some people ignore reviews that score things too high, but I legitamately have no complaints. I mean, I could complain about the lack of Ben Quadinaros, but that's a personal preference.
Cuts are seamless, pacing is superb, all of the editing decisions make sense, a perfect edit in my eyes. I had a great time watching it. It's the first time I've been able to fully follow the plot of this movie. I have trouble following movies sometimes, I've been getting better, I don't know if it's necessarily thanks to this edit, but at the very least I can say that it's not any less coherent.

QUALITY
I nearly always opt for the higher quality file, but due to space I had to go with the small MP4 this time. It largely looks very good and probably as good as you can expect for the file size, with the compression mainly becoming noticeable during some of the more busy FX shots. Regardless, Possessed has provided a much larger blu-ray option. Seeing the quality of the MP4, and having seen the quality of another Possessed Star Wars blu-ray, I have full confidence that the main version looks great.
AUDIO
I’m nitpicking here, but at 10:13 Qui-gon’s voice is fading out as we transition. It’s subtle, but my ears are easily triggered. Otherwise, audio editing is seamless, and a lot of cuts were made.
VISUAL
- 27:47 - there’s a series of quick-ish cuts at dinner to avoid Jar Jar’s antics(?). It didn’t work for me and felt a bit awkward.
- 36:14 - the framerate drops on qui-gon as we transition
- Deleted scene with the droid is upscaled and graded but I think the quality drop is still noticeable. Possessed has done as much as can be done given what there is to work with I think. I’ve seen other edits that implement this scene and it always sticks out to me. It does benefit the narrative though, so it's a trade off.
NARRATIVE
Rocket pacing at the start. Works well. It does slow down a bit when we meet Anakin and this was a minor slog for me, despite there being a signficant chunk of crap cut. Podrace is a blast though, and the climax is paced wonderfully, No narrative issues are created, and a lot has been removed, including the gungan city which I don’t think I’ve seen anyone do before. Possessed makes use of smaller trims as well to tighten dialogue and improve the general pace of things. An approach I love to see.
ENJOYMENT
Probably the most I’ve enjoyed an edit of this for a while. L8wrtr has always been my go-to for the first prequel, but this is a firm contender. Highly recommended.
