Brief Synopsis:
A redux? Why?
Because I realised that I've learned so much since I started this hobby that I should revisit one of my earliest edits. Star Wars deserves it.

Intention:
To find out what difference a year of fanediting experience makes. Do I agree with past edits? Did I make cuts I find unworthy in hindsight?

Editing Details:
My goal here is to yet again create an even more mature cut of Return of the Jedi and make something more in line with George Lucas' original title: Revenge of the Jedi.
Characters feel like their characters in the previous two movies. Mostly Han and Vader are far better in this Cut.

Cuts and Additions:
Changes with a ^ are different compared to the original edit for clarity
Cuts and Additions:
-Used 4k83 as my only source
-New opening crawl (same as before)
-Every cut is seamless. Show this to someone who hasn't seen the original and they won't notice.
^ In hindsight this was not true. NOW it is actually seamless.
-Removed c3po mentioning of chewbacca disappearing at Jabbas palace. He litterally shows up at jabba AFTER c3po
-Removed every line regarding a gift to jabba.
^ In the redux I made major cuts to the conversation with the droid at the door and Bib Fortuna for pacing, and to keep Jabba's palace mysterious.
-Jabba doesnt even listen to luke offer after he realises it's about Han. He seizes the droids. No gifts here, just vile gangster behaviour. (what's Luke's plan anyway? Would he really give away his droids in exchange for Han? What if Jabba agrees with the trade?)
^ Mostly unchanged, but slightly better audio transitions
-Luke doesnt tell Jabba to underestimate his powers, because Jabba immediately uses the trap door when Luke tells him he is taking captain Solo anyway. Jabba does NOT mess around.
-Removed a few small sections of C3po being comedic, but not all of them.
-Boba Fett crashes into the sail barge but we dont see him fall into the pit like an idiot.
-Boba Fett doesnt fire a shot and misses like a blind idiot. Han now hits him on the jetpack before he takes the shot.
-Re structures the entire sail barge fight sequence
^ Better audio transitions all around
-Removed the emperor foreseeing that luke will come, considering he couldnt even sense him on the ship.
-Removed the point of view line by Obi Wan
-Removed Luke immediately realising who his sister is
-Removed a few cheesy lines during the briefing, but not all of them.
^ Removed the 'ask me again sometime' line since Luke doesn't know yet
-Restructures the Han/Lando conversation at the Falcon to feel more mature.
^ This is improved alot in the redux. The original edit really shows my lack of expertise here.
-Leia is found by a mysterious figure (spoiler alert: it's an ewok)
-Removed the ewoks not listening to God C3PO. They now immediately release Leia and she rushes to Han to kiss him
^ Massively different in the Redux. I still removed the 'we will eat you' part of this story, but kept them captured and Luke using the Force to get them out of this predicament. In hindsight I feel like we don't see enough Force use to completely remove this scene.
-Removed the entire bedtime story
^ Massively different in Redux. Now the bedtime story is transformed into a town meeting where the Ewoks discuss what to do
-Removed a few lines during luke/leias conversation to keep Luke more mysterious
-Leia is upset by the news about being a sister and tells han to go away. He clearly realises she is emotional and doesnt go away. She notices him and asks him to hold her.
-Removed every mention that Vader must obey his master.
-Removed Vader's dumbass 'HEEEEE will come to MEEEE????' line.
-Emperor now says : 'you are now mine' instead of 'you and your father are now mine'
-Removed the star destroyer captain spoiling the emperors surprise. Now Lando asks 'why arent they attacking' and we cut to the emperor announcing the operational battle station.
-Reduced the corny ewok battle but still kept a lot of the epic moments like the ropes being tossed around the speeder bikes!
^ Some slight tweaks, not really worth mentioning
-removed the ATST boobytraps
- Edited out the tell your sister line at the end, but kept the rest of the emotional moment with luke and vader.
^ Re-instated in Redux. I feel it's an emotional moment and warranted. Bad decision of me to cut it.
-Removed every Han being jealous of Luke moment. Leia litterally declared her love two times already so no need for it.
^ Reworked their final conversation in Redux to be less stilted. The original edit still *feels* edited.
-Luke isnt at the celebration, he just lost his dad. Movie ends with Vaders funeral, leaving a far more impactful final image with viewers.
Better audio transitions, and we now end before the camera pans back down again

I would highly recommend this edit to anyone who wants to see a light edit of ROTJ (like me). There are no major structural or narrative changes. What you will get is the same story with the same pacing just as you remembered it but with a more mature, less goofy feel to it all. A lot of silliness is removed, dialogue is sharper, characters have better arcs. All those changes are very well done.

To be completely honest, I’m not a fan of this movie. Well, I absolutely adore the Throne Room stuff but despise everything else. So I was curious to see what DK could do with it. Poorly conceived scenes like pretty much everything on Tatoonine and everything with the Ewoks are minimized if not fixed. And there are definitely head scratchers from the original that are narratively fixed. There’s still precious little of substance that happens in the first 2/3 of the movie though and that lack of story makes the silliness less forgivable. But that’s not something DK can do much about and he has trimmed it down substantially. Things that seemed cool in 83 feel quaint or downright dated now and it’s all just so much more noticeable in this film than the previous two due to lack of good storytelling. The ending is much improved IMO, and critically Han is left a much better character (though I still think there’s little story arc left for Leia or Han in this movie). To be brief, I have a hard time sitting through most of this movie, but DK has made it about as palatable as it is likely to get.
I’m not an editor so I perhaps don’t have a keen eye for the technical, but I didn’t notice anything that seemed out of place. There are some jarring cuts in this movie but I’m 99% sure they were always there. A few of DK’s cuts feel like they come too quickly, but I think that is more due to the fact that, knowing the source material so well, you expect something to be there and then it isn’t. The only issue I had is with the very ending. The cut to the credits isn’t smooth. But DK had told me he made improvements there after I downloaded but I couldn’t get the fix to work. So I’m reluctant to drop points since it may well be already fixed.
In summary, I think this is a great edit for those that want to keep RotJ more or less intact but minimize some of the poor narrative choices. And it looks great on my 88” TV!

DK has done an AMAZING job with this edit. Jedi was always my loveable but a tad frustrating entry in the OT. After the masterpiece of Empire, it was always going to be tough to follow it up. And the less capable director, kiddie-oriented Ewoks, and some strangely-delivered dialogue and story points made this a less than perfect film already.
With all that said, DK has done a great job in elevating ROTJ into a more serious, more seamless, and more worthy movie! The edits made the Jabba's Palace scene move more quickly and make more sense, the Rebels interactions with the Ewoks wastes less time, and Han really benefits most from the edit, coming across as less buffoonish!
I still have my own personal preferences that differ a bit from the editor's choices. Putting Vader's funeral pyre after the finale celebration makes Luke isolated from his friends rather than with them (he reason he beat the Emperor– faith in his friends). And it made the transition to the end credits a bit jarring. I'm also not a fan of the original Yub Nub song, much preferring John William's celebration score in the Special Editions. But that's all just me!
The video source is a bit grainy for my tastes too, but it does give it the original release feel. If you prefer that, you'd definitely give it a 10. But most all of the edits, transitions, audio, etc. is excellent! Great work on elevating ROTJ into a better class of film, in all the ways that were possible!

This is a great personal take on RotJ that 100% achieves what it sets out to do.
If you're like Jedi, but you're frustrated by some of the more child oriented aspects of it, this is definitely the edit for you.
The important details of the movie all remain. As someone who doesn't mind the lighter content in the original, I would rank this edit completely on level with it, but the overall tone is darker, more serious, and more mature. Making it a potentially vast improvement for some viewers. The improvements to Han's character alone make it a worthy substitute.
Recommend.

Return of The Jedi has always been the least favorite of the favorite three.
Many great editors have put their skills to the test on this movie. Some with ummm...interesting results. Some with great results. I always felt like Spence's second version was as definitive as a fanedit of this movie might get until well...you know...who...releases their version?
Enter DonkeyKonga. I had just enjoyed his take on another Lucas franchise movie. One that has certainly been edited to death. Since his edit of that movie was good enough to stand toe to toe with all of the great edits that came before his, I decided to give this edit (his proudest achievement?) A watch.
The seven of us who just watched this REDUX version in my home theatre were certainly impressed. We didn't decide that it was better than Spence's version but we did feel like ot was different enough to decide that it is just as good.
Excellent work, Donkey! Have a banana and a barrel on us!
Highly recommended!
