The video editing is top notch and the audio creation Agent 9 undertook is inspiring. I was skeptical of this edit as I absolutely LOVED Hans Zimmer's score, but I found myself smiling and having fun when Superman knelt down for his initial flight and John William's familiar theme cued.

The video looks great for a 5 gb mp4 file. The color correction is spectacular. Any chance of getting a color corrected Man of Steel original?

The audio was a little jarring at first. The center track sounded rough and lifeless, but was tolerable. I'm impressed with the isolation that you were able to achieve as this is a music driven story. I found that the removal of Hans Zimmer's score actually made some of the ridiculous cgi fight scenes more tolerable. Perhaps because it was sooo much better than the video linked to the 80's music source? Who knows? I only noticed one time when Zimmers' score could be heard when Superman began to rise up in the world engine's gravity well. Other than that it was great.

The narrative felt rushed in some places, but this is a supplemental edit, and movie for that fact. We know how he gets there, we know where he grew up, it's ok to fast forward to him becoming Superman. I liked Lois Lane more in this edit also because of the change of narrative.

I thoroughly enjoyed this edit of Man of Steel. It has brought a breath of fresh air to a movie that I had hoped was better, but still enjoyed. Great job Agent 9! Perhaps a similar treatment for the dark knight series using the 60's tv show camp? :)

This was a fun edit. :)

Agent 9 has recut Man of Steel using the original Donner's Superman The Movie as a template, and replacing the Hans Zimmer soundtrack with the classic John Williams score.

And for the most part he is very successful.

The cut work is very good, the biggest cuts being the Krypton prologue and young Clark's flashbacks, along with a restructuring of Clark's finding of the Fortress and meeting of Lois. I enjoyed all these changes. It moves the story along faster, Clarks has a more mysterious quality, we learn about him through Lois's point of view and any information lost during the Krypton sequence we learn during Jor-el's education of Clark. In fact, I actually wish more had been cut. In particular, I think the entire Smallville battle could have been cut once Zod departed without significant impact on the narrative and I do wish the Metropolis destruction could have been trimmed even more than Agent 9 had, but I applaud all the clever cuts he did make.

But the real star of this edit is the soundtrack replacement. Agent 9 did exceptional work in this department! BRAVO!!! For the most part, the audio work is seamless and adds a very uplifting, nostalgia quality to the film.

However, there were times where I felt the Superman theme was used too often. There were points where it felt repetitive or too soon or an alternate, more subdued track or cue would have been more appropriate. It was almost too much of a good thing.... it sort of highlighted how these are films of very different era's and how the interpretation of the hero has changed, and the soundtrack did not always quite fit the way one would hope it would.

But overall, this was a very positive alternate viewing experience and I highly recommend it.

THUMBS UP!

I enjoyed this edit more than I should and that is because of the massive replacement of the soundtrack with parts from John William's soundtrack* from older Superman-movies and because of the new colourgrading which is just nicer on the eye. Great work, Agent9, kudos for those!

But the narrative in the first half could use some work:

------------------------Spoiler-begin---------------------------------

spence already mentioned it, it's quite a problem that we don't see Clark grow up and learn about his abilities, instead we see him grown up and nearly immediately getting his superman-suite. This actually reminds me of the way it was in the "Supergirl"-movie, where she comes out from her dimension onto earth and immediately has her supergirl-outfit and flies around (I have to admit though that Helen Slater looked just beautiful flying around as Supergirl :)).

The other problem is that it is unclear that Zod and co were organizing a coup d'etat until they were captured, I thought that they were acting on the orders of the council, maybe some scenes cut made this more confusing.

*The use of the Williams score really helps improve the feeling, but during the scene of Superman killing Zod and his crying out, it was better with the silence of the original to underline the shock.

-------------Spoiler-End----------------

Editing by the way was very smooth and well done, and nice work on the credits in the beginning, similar to the credits of the original Superman-movies.

All in all, it's better than the theatrical version, because of the new score and colours, and because the destruction is reduced, but imho it could be and should be improved regarding the narrative of the first half. I hope you will consider a version 2.0 because you are on the right track, Agent 9.

I thoroughly enjoyed this edit as a way to revisit Man of Steel through a new lens. While I don't feel the John Williams score is my personal choice to score this movie, it's always fun to hear the Superman theme when Superman is getting about, and the tracks were well chosen and very well integrated. Visually, the regrade works, although I did notice some minor artifacts in places, but overall it feels fresh and easy to watch. Not every edit was wholly invisible, but it was never too distracting from the ongoing film. Sources other than MoS were extremely well utilised, and I'm not certain I spotted every single one, and certainly if I hadn't known going in that they were there I don't think I would have noticed at all.

Overall I don't think this replaces the original for me, but that speaks more to my personal preferences than to a question of quality. A really great fan edit that is undeniably an improvement to source material, and definitely worth a watch even if you don't think you need another Man of Steel edit.

Unfortunately, I really didn't enjoy this edit. I quite enjoyed the original version but admit I saw it a year or so ago so I will try and be as fair as I can with this review.

Negatives first,

The soundtrack was a mismatch. It just didn't fit in my opinion. It was nice to hear the classic theme songs and that but it just didn't keep with the pacing of the action and the emotion of the scenes throughout the movie.

The intro credits were too long and incredibly dated. Its understandable to want to reclaim that nostalgia and authenticity of the older films but again, it just didn't suit. I had realised I was messing around on my phone during the opening credits and that's not what you want really when trying to hold a viewers attention.

The first act felt rushed and incomplete. I felt like Clark becoming superman was literally thrown in our face too fast without any character development at all. Because of this rush, it removed a lot of other characters impacts during the film too. Clark learning to control his powers and even his adopted father dying were cut which heavily impacted my emotions when first viewing the film.

The positives,

I thought the colour correction was good. From a technical point of view I was very impressed. Although it never truly bothered me personally but I heard this was an issue for many.

The visual quality was very good. Both in editing and resolution.

End thoughts,

I have only recently got into watching fan edits, and maybe naive in saying this but I believe it will probably be better to only watch fan edits that you actually had strong issues with before hand. As I remember enjoying the original, I suppose this version felt inferior to me. I would advise anyone to watch for themselves. An opinion is only an opinion :)

Thanks to the editor anyway
