Brief Synopsis:
This movie in its original format feels like there should be more going on than there actually is, and it left me feeling unfulfilled and slightly annoyed. By removing as much of the filler and misleads as possible without hurting the flow of the narrative, I believe I have made a movie that treats its viewer with more respect while telling an interesting story with a fairly unique premise.
Intention:
WAY WAY too much of this movie is spoon-fed to you, the "dumb" viewer, so I removed as much of the over-exposition as I could without deliberately making anything vague. There were actually quite a few scenes where, for some inexplicable reason, they literally say out loud what they just did right after they did it. I can't make heads nor tails of it but M. Night seems to do this a lot, so I think it might be him specifically making his movies impossible to misunderstand. In the exact opposite direction there were too many red herrings, so I trimmed those back too. What you end up with is a shorter movie that tells an interesting story without too much filler. It's a shame there aren't any good deleted scenes to add back in.

By removing all of the (redundant) flashbacks and fixing the story to be chronological, the main issues with the original vanish immediately. The film becomes well-paced and the tension gradually rises, instead of intermittently like in the original. I loved to experience the film like this, it’s definitely the superior version.

At 11m56 there’s a drop in the audio volume and a bit of static, looks like artefacts from recoding. All audio and video transitions seemed perfect.

Edit 15/12/2023: the audio issue is fixed on v2.0, I've udpated my score accordingly

Thank you for your review! I went back and improved the audio in that section so you should not experience that pop any longer. I appreciate you helping me make this edit better :)

A streamlined presentation of a middling adaptation of an excellent book I haven't read, but should.

A/V QUALITY

Pristine.

AUDIO EDITING

There was one music transition that didn't seem entirely natural to me, and I there were two subtle audio pops in one section, but otherwise seamless.

VISUAL EDITING

Seamless.

NARRATIVE

Some smart excisions. At least one flashback is retained (good!), and the story moves along at a well-metered pace.

ENJOYMENT

It's by no means a favourite of mine, but since this represents an IMPROVEMENT of the original, I rate this a 10.

Thank you kindly, jasonflippy

One of the biggest problems I had with the original film is that it's weirdly non chronological and the constant flashbacks which take the whole feeling of being trapped in this cabin away.

The other thing this edit added is a bit more ambiguity and mystery to the characters of the four horseman.

And the biggest thing it does. The runtime is perfect, it's a thing for me but the 80 minute runtime is perfection for me.

Was planning on doing an edit of this myself but now that this one is out I don't see much point to it. The ending is still weak for me but no amount of editing can fix it.

So yeah anytime I wanna watch this film it will be this edit.
