Editing Details:
Much like my Episode I fanedit, I took notes from Aristotle’s Poetics in my editing decisions. However, for this film, I also wanted to adopt Kubrick’s own brand of technical perfectionism that he was known for. So, I also had to make sure that the editing looked as seamless as possible in honor of Kubrick.
Cuts and Additions:
-Helen’s babysitter, Roz

-Bill's talk with Nick Nightingale at Ziegler’s
-Most of Bill’s phone conversation (Since the Nathanson subplot no longer exists)
-Three of the four visions of Alice mating with the naval officer (Once is enough)
-The fratboys
-The Marion subplot
-The Domino subplot
+The uncut and uncensored Somerton scene
-The coffee table scene
-Bill deciding to leave his job early
-Bill’s second visit to Somerton (and 2nd warning)
-Bill calling Marion’s family
-Spinning hospital entrance shot
/Moved Bill’s return home to before the big “talk” with Ziegler
-First shot of the mask in the climax (For surprise’s sake)

This was a very well done, professional looking edit. The color in the opening party scene was pretty overbearing, but the rest of the film looked great. I appreciated and agreed with many of the cut scenes and shots. And I am SO glad Eyepainter cut the first shot of the mask next to Alice in the bed, it is mindblowing that the original editor placed it there.

My biggest problem was the cut Domino subplot. It is true the movie generally works without her. But near the end when Bill says "I'll tell you everything", that "everything" would be a lot more impactful if he told his wife that he went to a prostitute's apartment and almost slept with her. I also would have liked to see the return to the mansion, as I always thought it was creepy and foreboding.

Overall, this was very well done. There was one weird audio loss (in the orgy scene where the woman goes in to kiss Bill) but it didn't bother me one bit. Great job, Eyepainter! This was a great new way to watch one of my favorite films.

I should note that the orgy scene is uncut and didn't contain any changes to the audio at all, so the audio loss you're referring to is in the official release as well.

Otherwise, thanks for the kind words, backfat. I'm glad you enjoyed it.

The color grading makes the film better, I like it. The video quality is not perfect, but that’s due to the source.
The cuts seemed to flow incredibly well, I couldn’t find any difference between the original ones and the new cuts for the edit, that was the most remarkable aspect of it, great work on this!

The Domino subplot and the Marion subplot are not needed, the story works without them.

To be honest, something in the original just didn’t click for me even though I love pretty much every other Kubrick film; maybe because he was experimenting on a few deviations from his usual style. Nevertheless, this edit worked better. The reduced runtime is likely helping, and the narrative changes were well tough-out.

My first time seeing this film in any form, thought it would be a good test of the edit to see how it stood before watching the official Blu-ray.

To my eyes almost nothing stood out as being unoriginal, the minor exceptions are a couple of establishing shots that felt as if they ran a bit fast, but cannot see any trace of the excised subplots or anything else that consists of the deleted 35 minutes. Video looks quite soft but as mentioned that is a consequence of the source: the colour grading works well and I cannot see any artefact from the re-rendering, no complaints about the audio at all.

As for the story, whatever editing has taken place doesn't make it feel any less "Kubrickian" than the other films of his I have seen, though as Eyepainter points out there is definitely a greater lean towards sentimentality than much of his previous work. Wonder if it means anything that I occasionally had moments where the character of Bill Harford reminded me of Patrick Bateman, but that may just be the resemblances from certain angles and latter's actor using the former's as a source of inspiration for said character.

Will definitely have to rewatch, will probably try the full version next, hope that it is as hard to draw ones eyes away from it as from this edit!
