Editing Details:
Much like my Episode I fanedit, I took notes from Aristotle’s Poetics in my editing decisions. However, for this film, I also wanted to adopt Kubrick’s own brand of technical perfectionism that he was known for. So, I also had to make sure that the editing looked as seamless as possible in honor of Kubrick.
Cuts and Additions:
-Helen’s babysitter, Roz

-Bill's talk with Nick Nightingale at Ziegler’s
-Most of Bill’s phone conversation (Since the Nathanson subplot no longer exists)
-Three of the four visions of Alice mating with the naval officer (Once is enough)
-The fratboys
-The Marion subplot
-The Domino subplot
+The uncut and uncensored Somerton scene
-The coffee table scene
-Bill deciding to leave his job early
-Bill’s second visit to Somerton (and 2nd warning)
-Bill calling Marion’s family
-Spinning hospital entrance shot
/Moved Bill’s return home to before the big “talk” with Ziegler
-First shot of the mask in the climax (For surprise’s sake)

The color grading makes the film better, I like it. The video quality is not perfect, but that’s due to the source.
The cuts seemed to flow incredibly well, I couldn’t find any difference between the original ones and the new cuts for the edit, that was the most remarkable aspect of it, great work on this!

The Domino subplot and the Marion subplot are not needed, the story works without them.

To be honest, something in the original just didn’t click for me even though I love pretty much every other Kubrick film; maybe because he was experimenting on a few deviations from his usual style. Nevertheless, this edit worked better. The reduced runtime is likely helping, and the narrative changes were well tough-out.

I have always loved most Kubrick films. A Clockwork Orange became one of my favorite movies as a kid when I snagged the video disc (the ones that look like records not big cds) from one of my parent's video disc rental stores. 2001 changed my entire outlook on SF films when I was a kid. I was that nerd who ducked his head in the Star Wars crowd because I liked Kubrick more than Lucas.

That being said, I was immediately drawn to Eyes Wide Shut when it was released. I couldn't fathom Top Gun Tom and his trophy wife in a Kubrick film.

I was surprised, neither were bad and seemed entirely in their element playing surreal characters.

When my friend, Eyepainter first announced that they were going to put their spin on this Kubrick classic, his last dance before the big one, I was curious?

The length of time that it took to finish the commentary track made me almost forget about the edit. The controversy surrounding the nudity in the art that I did for the edit kept me interested (the original uncensored art is a bonus included in the download).

I'm not going to give the edit away but I will say that Eyepainter accomplished what they set out to do with this edit. It's top notch.

It seems a bit soft and a little grainy to me but that didn't take me out of it.

Excellent work, as always, my friend! See you in Gotham City!

My first time seeing this film in any form, thought it would be a good test of the edit to see how it stood before watching the official Blu-ray.

To my eyes almost nothing stood out as being unoriginal, the minor exceptions are a couple of establishing shots that felt as if they ran a bit fast, but cannot see any trace of the excised subplots or anything else that consists of the deleted 35 minutes. Video looks quite soft but as mentioned that is a consequence of the source: the colour grading works well and I cannot see any artefact from the re-rendering, no complaints about the audio at all.

As for the story, whatever editing has taken place doesn't make it feel any less "Kubrickian" than the other films of his I have seen, though as Eyepainter points out there is definitely a greater lean towards sentimentality than much of his previous work. Wonder if it means anything that I occasionally had moments where the character of Bill Harford reminded me of Patrick Bateman, but that may just be the resemblances from certain angles and latter's actor using the former's as a source of inspiration for said character.

Will definitely have to rewatch, will probably try the full version next, hope that it is as hard to draw ones eyes away from it as from this edit!
