Brief Synopsis:
Second Scribbling Cut revisits a previously light edit of mine and indulges in significantly heavier trims for pacing, as well as to songs and humour. The Taxidermist scene has been re-scored to aid the new tone and there is a slight shift to the order of some scenes. The result is the removal of an additional 30 minutes (39 minutes in total), without sacrificing any of the core narrative. Optional audio is included for a crisper recording of the opening and closing themes, as well as the iconic Albert Hall sequence.
Intention:
I’ve always liked the original film and my first scribbling cut addressed mainly personal nitpicks, allowing for something chiefly from the parent’s perspective and eliminating filler. After reading Mnkykungfu’s criticisms, however, I could definitely see room for improvement. Having already got my original edit out of my system, I felt freed up to be significantly more “brutal” with the cuts here. No messing around. In my opinion, this is about as good a pacing as you can expect from the film without sacrificing character. With nearly 40 minutes cut, if this still tries your patience, I’d wager the film probably isn’t for you.
Other Sources:
North by Northwest: Original Soundtrack
Grain overlays
Foley lifted from Double Indemnity
Special Thanks:
Thank you to those that have encouraged me and contributed to the thread. This cut would not exist if Mnkykunfu had not been critical of my original cut, and they challenged me to do something more ambitious with the Taxidermy scene. Thank you also to Daedal, for feeding back on the interrogation scene and prompting me to refine the cuts there. Thanks also to my friend Joebby, who proofed the first draft.

Special thanks to CAL0901 who has tiredly worked to make subtitles available for many of my edits. The sub file he created for my original scribbling cut was used as the basis for the subs for this one.

1:03:20-1:07:54 - The whole orchestra sequence is revisited from my last cut. Previously, all I did was cut out the portion of the music that HItchcock had clearly looped. Having removed this repeated section, I then made trims that fit with the new length of the piece. This time I have made various trims and tweaks to the piece of music in order to have more control over the pace of the scene. However, there still has to be a balance between the realistic length of the piece, maintaining the general rythm of things, and allowing all the action to flow naturally. Ben does not spend much less time searching here, but there is a faster build up to his arrival and the killer making their move. There is also less faffing about with Ben and Jo. Ben arrives, briefly interacts with Jo, then immediately goes to look for the killer.

General trims to the pace of the conversation. This scene has some of the worst acting in the film. Generally tried to make it faster paced/more heated, trimming poor delivery where possible
1:11:31 - trimmed draytons awkward silence. Trimmed start of convo with Buchanon
1:14:50 - adjusted volume, EQ and reverb on Jo’s vocals to match the distance as the shot moves outside the room
Trimmed shots leading up to the room Hank is in
1:15:21 - cut one whole verse and chorus of Jo’s song
1:15:31 - scrubbing of score, foley, and rescoring for continuity with what part of the song Jo is on
1:16:32 - cut line from song so that Jo reacts quicker to the whistling
1:16:51 - Ben slips out the room quicker
1:17:00 - Cut an entire verse and chorus from Jo’s song. Ben generally makes his way out of the room quicker
1:18:35 - mrs drayton intervenes quicker. Pace of dialogue increases
1:19:31 - trimmed shot
1:20:09 - trimmed shot

Having not seen this film (or the original that this is a remake of) for a few years, I suddenly felt the need for a Hitchcockian thriller and from its description this edit seemed to fit the bill perfectly.

It did not disappoint, plenty of thrills with zero drag in the story and not an edit out of place. I cannot think of how it could be condensed down more, which is interesting when you consider that the 1934 version is even shorter at only 75 minutes.

There was a fade-out that felt a little fast and one instance where I consciously thought that a scene had been cut, but it turned out that these were both native to the source, the latter at first might appear to be a plot hole but it makes sense when you stop to think a little.

I chose the track with the rerecorded music, nothing gives away its origins other than the comparative clarity but this is fitting for the scenes as you want to focus on just the score and the visuals.

The only thing I can currently think of that I would have liked to have been left in is Hitch's customary cameo at the market, in a shot of a few seconds among others cut for pacing, hardly too important though! The main issue is the video quality, while generously encoded with no artifacts the source unfortunately has problems such as significant colour flickering (which has only recently been rectified in the recent restoration for the American 4K disc) but that's hardly the fault of the editor.

I hope to get the chance to watch the initial Scribbling Cut soon, looking forward to seeing what the extra half-hour adds.

Big Hitchcock fan so any one of his films cut down by over 30 minutes would be sacrilegious. Though the original film is good it was not my favorite but wow this edit puts it right back up there in Hitchcock classic status. So my problem with The Man Who Knew too Much is it dragged to me. Repeated watches were not as exciting as Psycho, The Birds, etc. This edit is excellent as it tightens the movie, makes some excellent music changes and just improves the pacing. I can't believe how much better the movie went by and how much I enjoyed a movie I considered a minor Hitchcock movie. I just did not miss those over 30 minutes of changes. It was seamless. So a big thank you to the editor for making this movie new again for me. I highly recommend to everyone including my fellow Hitchcock fans who need to see this film like it is new and improved by the master himself.
