Brief Synopsis:
Sword Art Online Abridged is an abridged series by Something Witty Entertainment under the YouTube channel SWEabridged. It is a parody of the anime series Sword Art Online. Ascending Aincraid is the same story in movie form.

In 2022, a virtual reality massively multiplayer online role-playing game (VRMMORPG) called Sword Art Online (SAO) was released. With the NerveGear, a helmet that stimulates the user's five senses via their brain, players can experience and control their in-game characters with their minds. Both the game and the NerveGear were created by Akihiko Kayaba. On November 6, 10,000 players log into SAO's mainframe cyberspace for the first time, only to discover that they are unable to log out. Kayaba appears and tells the players that they must beat all 100 floors of Aincrad, a steel castle which is the setting of SAO, if they wish to be free. He also states that those who suffer in-game deaths or forcibly remove the NerveGear out-of-game will suffer real-life deaths. Kirito, a beta tester of the game, adventures through Aincraid to keep himself, and those around him, from dying and beat Sword Art Online.
Intention:
I love this series. The first arc of the show translated very well into the Abridged series. When the first few episodes aired, the creators were trying a few different things like a recap intro, Christmas episode, or live action inserts/narration. After they found their footing they stuck to anime only production. I felt that this series would greatly benefit if I removed those experimental elements and then super cut the remainder into a film. What remains is an anime only supercut complete with credits from the original airing.

Editing Details:
With anime it becomes easy to slightly lengthen or shorten any clip due to most clips being static or basically large pictures. Exporting those clips into Photoshop makes adding mouth movement or subtitle removal easy. The SAOA wiki keeps a comprehensive list of all music they use in each episode which makes it easy to sync modified clips to the music.

Very high quality edit that only improves upon the original abridged series! It's seriously seamless between episodes, and tightens up the narrative which makes it surprisingly easy to watch in one sitting. Only possible complaints are already apparent in the original, such as a few low res shots. Definitely worth watching instead of a full youtube rewatch, which can be a slog with all the disclaimers and some extended episodes compared to this well condensed edit.

Overall 100% recommended and i completely look forward to the same treatment for season 2 when it's finished!

Thank you for the review ❤️❤️❤️ perhaps I'll make some small edits and upscale some of the low res shots. I'm definitely doing the same treatment to part 2 once SWE finishes releasing it.

SAO once they leave Aincrad is a pile of hot trash of varying temperatures, and SAO Abridged is unquestionably better than baseline SAO. Watching Abridged on YT is... an endeavor, though, with all of the progressively more-annoying disclaimers, artifacts of the platform and its evolution, and release process in between each episode, and that's why I haven't revisited since it wrapped several years ago. This is definitely the authoritative version of SAO:A's Aincrad arc. (Thanks for removing some of Asuna's cringier racisms. SAO:A started up over a decade ago and it shows.)

Only criticisms are purely about issues the original creators introduced, not the faneditor, so perfect score for this from me.

For full disclosure I was part of the review team for this edit.

This was a very interesting watch for me. It is a very niche thing, a movie version of a voiceover parody of an anime TV show. It's a really fun story and the new jokes are surprisingly good!

Turning it into a movie was a great choice, and it flows very nicely. You can occasionally glean from the story beats that it used to be episodic but thanks to Hammbrew's great editing it feels like it was actually designed to be a movie.

There was only one part that I felt didn't quite fit the "movie" flow but would have been very difficult to remove without causing problems, but I fully acknowledge that was just a "me" thing as I am sure fans of the series will be happy that not too much was cut.

Overall excellent work and a fun, fun watch!
