Star Wars - Episode II: Attack of the Ridiculousness

I thought I already had a review for this, but I don't see it now. Anyway...

If you thought that The Ridiculous Menace was hilarious, you should definitely see the sequel. And if you didn't think TRM was hilarious, you should have your head examined.

Frink brings some fresh hilarity to this Star Wars prequel, with a few recurring gags and a slew of great new jokes. As with TRM, there are now some scenes in the actual prequels that I can't watch right now without thinking of Frink's version and giggling uncontrollably.

A note to families: The scene on Naboo where Anakin and Padme get lovey-dovey with each other has been changed into a scene which, while hilarious, is probably not for young eyes. (I believe the footage is from one of the "Naked Gun" movies, although I could be mistaken.) Keep your remote or clicker handy on that scene just in case.

My favorite scenes are the speeder chase on Naboo and the following scene in the bar, and Anakin's reworked nightmare. But as before, all of it is great.

Video/audio quality: As with TRM, there are lots of places where the mouth movements don't sync up with the new dialogue, but I'd much rather have a funny edit than a "realistic" one. I'm noting this to make people aware in case they aren't prepared in advance, but I wouldn't change a frame of it. It feels like a dubbed Godzilla movie, which makes it all the more hilarious.

So if you want a good laugh and haven't seen this one yet, then you catch on pretty slow. Catch on quicker and watch this one soon!

Now, there are two of them! But that really doesn't do this justice. While in keeping with the style of the first, and its many running gags, this one manages to surpass the original. I found myself bursting into hysterical laughter frequently. The manner in which the Fetts are handled is particularly inspired. I really don't want to go in to further detail and spoil anything. If you liked the first one, you'll love the second. If you didn't this one won't win you over. There's some odd audio mixing in certain spots, but never to the point of anything being (unintentionally) inaudible or at an inappropriate volume.

Update: The 14 month anniversary edition has corrected a frame rate issue. The disc is now properly encoded and flagged as 24p, with 3:2 pulldown. Picture detail is nice for all sources, very close to the original DVD releases.

This is a hilarious edit - probably the funniest I've ever seen. Strongly recommended if you enjoyed the first.

All the praise I heaped on part 1 goes for part 2 as well. I would have to say, maybe this gets a little carried away with scenes turning into full on music videos a little too often. And I would have enjoyed hearing "Now, there are two of them!" about 1000 more times! That never seemed to get old to me in the first one. But in this edit, I especially thought the Seinfeld diner scene was inspired, and using Crusty the Clown's voice was the PERFECT voice for that character---one clear improvement over the first movie. I also wish Daffy Duck's voice was featured even more than it was. The "Hey, look over there" line was a little more surreal in this edit, frequently emanating from nowhere. I loved Gob Bluth again, and the call out to Arrested Development's call out to Charlie Brown with the excellent quick usage of The Vince Guaraldi Trio. I also applaud the Rear Window footage, short thought it was!
I had never been able to sit through this movie (or any of the 3 prequels) until these two edits. There were things I preferred in the first one, and things I preferred here--I couldn't give either the edge (which is a good thing; I remember watching the 2nd War of the Stars and being disappointed that it lacked so much of the crazy that was in the first one. It also wasn't done in the same grindhouse style. I'm glad you kept to the vision of the 1st one with this sequel.)
This may not be the place for suggestions for your third sequel, but I would love just one scene where perhaps the MST3K silhouettes appear, watching the movie with us, and maybe use a second or two of the audio from Rifftrax's riff of Revenge of the Sith? Just a stray thought.
Again, I am def recommending this and looking forward to the 3rd one!

A/V Quality – 10/10 – No problems here.

Visual Editing – 9/10 – Making the aspect ratio consistent would have been nice, but that’s probably more personal preference than anything.

Audio Editing – 7/10 – To be honest, if this was any other edit, the audio editing rating would be even lower, but the jokes here present such a daunting audio editing challenge that I have to give you props for doing it as well as you did, even if it’s still very choppy at times.

Narrative – 9/10 – Didn't notice any especial problems with the plot, and trimming down the runtime was a good call.

Entertainment – 7/10 – It’s funny, but unfortunately I never thought it came close to the hilarity of The Ridiculous Menace. There is some really clever humor to be found, but there are also some segments that drag for a little while without anything notably funny. Or maybe those segments just didn't have my type of humor, I don’t know. Obviously a lot of work went into this, and I definitely think it’s worth watching once, even if I won’t be re-watching it several times like I did with The Ridiculous Menace. Definitely looking forward to the third installment.

I hate being that guy, but I just don't care for this one. I know that a tremendous amount of work was put into this by several of the folks here at FE and I do appreciate the cleverness. You people do really have some mad skilz.

I just didn't find myself enjoying it much. I had previously tried the first one and felt the same way. That's not to say I didn't get a chuckle here and there. The montage surrounding the Padme/Anakin hookup had me chuckling a bit and I liked some of the choices made for the voices. (3PO, Jar Jar). Also the song choices were good. (Shaft, I think I'm a clone now)

I certainly would encourage everyone to give it a try. It may just hit you right square in the funny bone. As for me, I'm gonna call 1800-DEAL-WITH-IT.
