Brief Synopsis:
Implementing the suggestion of the eponymous filmmaker and critic, to make what he considered the theoretically ideal version of this iconic 1948 western.
Intention:
According to Peter Bogdanovich, “Red River” director Howard Hawks conveyed in an interview that he preferred the 127-minute theatrical cut/voice version (VV), citing the additional editing refinements made over the earlier 133-minute pre-release cut/book version (BV) and favouring Walter Brennan’s narration over pages of onscreen text.

It is widely known though that a climactic sequence during the final five minutes was compromised in the VV due to the interference of Howard Hughes, who cried plagiarism because of the similarities between it and his earlier film “The Outlaw” (which Hawks also worked on) and demanded changes. Many iterations were made in a back-and-forth between Hughes and the film's editor Christian Nyby until both were satisfied, but in the latter's words it "...still isn't right...", feeling disjointed when viewed on its own and a right let-down if one is familiar with the smoother way the same sequence plays out in BV.

Bogdanovich believed that “…the absolutely perfect version that Howard Hawks would have approved…” would play the like VV until these last five minutes, when Wayne “…starts walking through the cows…”, at which point it changes to the BV with the original intact ending. That has now more-or-less been done, in a small sense finally finishing off the film about a decade since those comments were made and nearly 75 years after it was first released.
Additional Notes:
About 30 seconds of unique film footage is added to the VV from the BV, other time differences are almost entirely in the vanity plates used.
Special Thanks:
Thanks to Dwight Fry for checking over the edit before release, despite only having a few cuts there is still always the possibility of making a mess of things!

Another great classic update from ParanoidAndroid,

This is one of those moview where the better ending improves what preceeds it and is thus more satisfying.

Sure, it is a light edit, but that doe not diminish the intent or final product.

Tecnicals are all good and lonf may this editor (an others) continue to deliver older movie revisions and improvements.

This is HISTORY being preserved.

A few years ago I remember hearing Bogdanovich's take on this movie and the problems with Howard Hughes etc that led to the ending being reedited. From that moment on the last few minutes of the film always bothered me. You just couldn't unsee it, and it definitely undermined what was clearly otherwise a masterpiece of the genre.

So it's great to report that this edit fixes the movie and finally gives us what I think it's fair to say is the movie that Howard Hawks would have chosen to release in 1948 had it been legally possible.

Essential for all fans of Red River and of Hawks. Thank you ParanoidAndroid.

I love Westerns and Howard Hawks' RED RIVER is one of the greatest ever made.
It is for me, pure cinematic perfection.

So how do you improve upon a genuine classic?

You restore the original, unedited ending of course!

A simple two cut edit that makes one of the best westerns ever even better.

Great stuff! :)

Thanks to Paranoid Android we finally have a definitive version of this landmark Western classic and are no longer forced to choose between a better paced cut with a truncated ending and a bit more awkward one with the proper ending. The two official cuts are 9/10 each. This is 10/10. Uncomplicated edit it may be, but it had to be done. Howard Hawks would be proud!
