Brief Synopsis:
"The Other Guys," a buddy cop comedy set against the Ponzi schemes of the 2000's, starring Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell, directed by Adam McKay, could have been SUCH a great movie if it didn't end up so silly and underdeveloped. I have made our lead characters into good, intelligent cops we actually want to root for and chopped many of the extreme, ridiculous jokes. The movie is now tightly-paced and a much more enjoyable comedy with a real heart.
Intention:
I wanted to take out dated jokes (anything that involved racism or homophobia) or any joke that made our heroes seem cartoonish and dumb (e.g. Allen not knowing that people can't fly, or Terry learning ballet to make fun of gay kids). I also removed a lot of Allen's spousal abuse and his backstory as a pimp, since it made no sense at all. Basically my goal was to turn them into guys we actually want to root for, and to make the movie into an actual cop movie instead of what felt like basically thirty loosely-connected SNL sketches with a cop theme.
Special Thanks:
My beautiful wife for being my test audience (and contributing a lot to the cut list).

I watched this with about 10 family members for a movie night, adults and kids. Everyone enjoyed the edit, and I mean really had a good time and most left saying they forgot how good that movie was. The work done on the film was very technically well done and the narrative flowed well, even with some big cuts to the film. We had so much fun watching it. Thanks for the great update Jasonflippy.

What a fantastic review!! I've been having such a tough time lately, just so much to do, so little downtime, lots of stress, and seeing this review really made me feel great. I love that you and your family enjoyed it, and thank you for taking the chance on my edit for your movie night!

This edit does what it says it does and you'll either enjoy it or it'll feel hollow. For me it fell closer to hollow as it cuts a few of my favorite moments. The slimming of the jokes that go too long and the complete cutting of the ex girlfriend were great choices, but cutting Gator cuts the final arc of his character. As a first time watch its probably a great movie, but as a multi OG watcher I can feel the laughter I'm missing. The upside is I also feel the cringe that is missing and that feels great! Worth a watch, its done so well that you will, at minimum, appreciate the hard work that went into it!

Thank you for the review! It felt tough cutting his Gator background but in the end I decided to remove it because (a) he's extremely rude to his wife because of it and never really makes up for it, which (b) it makes it hard to root for him, and (c) I figured "scared accountant turned action hero" was a fine enough arc. I'm glad you enjoyed it, thank you for the review!

Thank you Jasonflippy for this edit. The theatrical version did not age well in this day and age. But even back in the day when this movie came out, the humor was received as being forced, over the top and outdated.

I agree with all of the cuts and edits, which technically were flawless as far as I can tell.

After such a long time (forgetting it existed) I actually enjoyed this movie again, so thanks for that and a recommendation for everyone who never saw it to give it a chance with this edit! :)

Thank you for such a lovely review! I was also shocked when I watched it again at how dated, stupid, and frankly offensive the main characters were in a movie asking us to love them, which inspired my edit. I'm very glad you enjoyed my changes :)
