Cosmogony

When TMBTM announced this project a few months back I was deeply intrigued. Taking the viewer on "a journey about us" is no small feat, and I think if anyone but TMBTM attempted such an ambitious project it would have failed.

It's really difficult to talk about this project as it's more about the emotion than a story per say. That said, it's a beautifully crafted piece that, I think, everyone should experience: fans of films for the entertainment value, and fan editors to see what one can do with fanedits.

I only have a handful of minor criticisms. I would have much preferred 5.1 over stereo. I would have also liked an HD release as this definitely warrants a 1080p viewing in my opinion. (Combined I knocked off 1-star for this.) It did feel a tad long and could have been trimmed by a few minutes here and there. Finally, I think it would have been more effective in the scenes with just music, especially in the beginning, if there were subtle sound effects too. (No points off for this, just a personal preference.)

Some might say this is pretentious. It might be, but the edit is effective is worth at least one watch.

I was very excited to watch this when I first read about it. I love films and documentaries about the origins of life.

This film is very well made, especially the first half. I was stuck to the screen for the first hour. What an amazing experience. I thoroughly enjoyed most of this film. The only part I felt didn't fit as well was the scenes from The Emerald Forrest. I get how it adds to the narrative but it just ruined the flow of the movie for me.

Also, I did not like the soundtrack very much. I love Neil Young and Classic Rock but the songs choices just made the film feel like it was made in the 70s or 80s. I would have loved if had a vibe like Trent Reznors film scores. Or music from electronic producers like Aphex Twin, Boards of Canada, Teen Daze, Schlomo, or Clams Casino.

Overall, I really enjoyed watching this and will definitely be recommending this to people.

Ambitious story of humanity from the genesis of the cosmos to modern day.
Film fans will recognize 2001, Quest For Fire, Apocalypto, The Mission, etc …
It does seem to settle in the New World, omitting whole continents.
Also, it is dated. Scenes from Koyaanisqatsi would have pointed where humanity is headed.
Along with the eternal, suicidal conflicts we engage in.

This is a DVD, with menu and trailer, few editors bother with those nowadays.
The audio is superior to the video, though I found the audio too loud most of the time, often overwhelming what sparse dialogue there is.
As far as music choices, for every good tune, there were three I rolled my eyes at. Tastes vary, so I just tried to ignore.
By the end, I found “the story of us” suffered from overreach. I still wonder if TMBTM was trying to replicate a huge screen IMAX event.
TMBTM seems to be slowing down, too. Retired? Bummer, he remains a good editor.

It's an incredibly ambitious project. I don't think my mind would have ever put half of these films together but the TMBTM has really showed us what can be done with fan edits if you are willing to be bold. Overall, I really enjoyed seeing so many of my favorite films in such a new light.

Parts of Cosmogony were beautiful, combining tone poetry with reflections on life and humanity. I'm reminded of some of the documentaries and movies that have caused me to think of my place in the universe, and this ambitious edit is like a feature-length collage built from those pieces.

Cosmogony felt overly long in places, and large swaths of footage from The Emerald Forest carried unintentional goofiness that didn't match the tonality of the rest of the edit. The soundtrack was overlaid evenly and with skill and was appropriately ethereal or elegiac in places, though other musical selections didn't work so well and took me a bit out of the experience, particularly the overly dramatic synthesizers attached to the Apocalypto chase sequence.

The meditative and almost spiritual nature of TMBTM's effort reminds me of blueyoda's superb (fe) la vie series, in that they rely on no primary cinematic source to tell a deeply emotional story that cannot be neatly summarized. Definitely worth a watch.
