Years ago, I made an edit of Carlito's Way that completely removed Gail from the film, which, looking back, may have been a bit too drastic. DawnRazor took a more conservative approach here and pulled off a great edit.
By keeping Gail in the film, but for the bare minimum amount of time, you're still able to retain the full impact of the tragic ending. Good call on the narration. I was skeptical with the removal of the courtroom scene, but it's not needed at all. I really missed the Lalin scene, as it's one of the best, not only in the film but in the whole genre, but I'll begrudgingly admit that it's not essential.
The editing itself is well done and flows smoothly. I would have preferred a 5.1 audio track over stereo, but the original 5.1 wasn't all that great so not much is lost.
This is a great edit that's highly recommended for fans of the original.
