Brief Synopsis:
American History X had a very tumultuous post-production, ending with the director leaving the film and wanting his name taken off. He has disowned the film as Edward Norton supervised editing, adding over 20 minutes of footage that director Tony Kaye detested.

Based on an early workprint, this edit aims to recut and rearrange the film using this preliminary cut for reference, and present what the director's original intention could have been had he not clashed with the studio.
Intention:
As there is virtually no details out there about the production of the film, with the DVD/Blu-Ray containing no behind the scenes material, and only some hearsay about what happened in post, the workprint is the only reference for what Kaye's vision could of been.
It was really interesting to watch as almost every element was different, coverage, editing, music, voiceover, scene arrangement, etc. And so, I wanted to try and recreate what this version of the film could of been had he gotten the creative autonomy that he wanted.

Editing Details:
There's too much changed to list, but I did anyway. It's a lot of useless detail so here are the broad strokes.

- trimmed every scene, sometimes just a reaction shot, sometimes a line here or there, sometimes the start or end is gone
- Danny's flashbacks are all rearranged, breakfast with dad is right at the start instead of towards the end
- Prison sequence is all rearranged too, with stuff being cut and moved around for a different sequence of events
- new voiceover from both Danny and Derek, some are alternate takes for the theatrical, some are all new segements
- cut Derek and Danny meeting Sweeney andthe police captain on the way to school, and Derek agreeing to help with investigating the neo-nazi gang
- cut most of the suspense and tension around the final shooting in final minutes of the film, it's more of a shock than a built up event

The film is 20 minutes lighter so there are a lot of changes to make this happen. I wasn't able to accomplish many of the differences between both cuts, but I've done my best to try and recreate it with the materials I have.

Also, the curb-stomp is exactly the same as it is in the theatrical. There is no additional uncut gore footage. Both run visually parallel and are the exact same besides the theatrical cut having much more gruesome sound design.

I loved the original film so I had to check out this version by a well known fan editor. Overall this is a great edit. It was very interesting to see a version of the film closer to what the director originally intended. The only MINOR issue I had w/ this edit is the audio for the new narration feels a tiny bit awkward but at the same time I don't know how Bobson could have done it any better. I feel bad taking one point off but I'm trying to adhere to the new review policy and not hand out perfect 10's for everything. If you love the original film this is essential viewing. For me it doesn't quite replace the original going forward, which is always what I'm hoping for, but it sure makes for an interesting alternate cut of the film.

Bobson also has a very cool 25 minute introduction/commentary podcast available to listen to before watching that I would also recommend. For many people this will surely become their go-to version of American History X. Definitely check it out.

Holy S#!T...! Not only could I net tell a single cut or change when watching this, but a movie I already like is now a movie I love! All the emotions hit a little harder in this cut. It has been a while since I watched this so if the goal of an edit is to have someone not be able to tell this was an edit, then this truly deserves 10s.

The movie is so well written and acted that it kind of made me realize just how poorly things are most of the time now. The pacing in this cut is about as perfect as you can get and the structure really its home that all of this (minus the flashbacks) is Derrek's first day out of jail.

If there was anything that I could nit pick on this, it would be that when Sweeny goes to talk to the policy and they play Derrek's tape, that should be Black and White because that was a flashback, or at least it felt like it was one. So if I'm wrong, sorry for taking a star off LOL.

This is a true 10 for me. The amount of effort and research that seems to have gone into it is both incredible and invisible, as I didn't notice a single visual or audio glitch.

The changes in scene order served only to strengthen the story, and I think this is actually the first time that I noticed the entire current-day story takes place in less than 24 hours. You've taken a movie that shocked me as a teen and allowed it to turn it into a movie that truly saddened me as an adult by letting it become focused on the tragedy of watching a man lose his brother to his own mistakes, even as he escapes them.

This has been turned into such a tight 90-min movie that I'm not sure I can go back to the original. Excellent excellent work.
