It's been years since I watched the theatrical cut which as many fans were, I was disappointed. With the exception of the shaky cam, the color correction thankfully corresponds with the previous Die Hard films. The deleted scenes fit right at home with an inclusion of the Frank Sinatra song that was executed phenomenally well. While yes although the film in my opinion is still the weakest entry of the series, this fan edit gives me those "it was better than I remembered it" vibes and I would give this a recommendation for some who want to give this film another watch.
One hell of a cut. I really liked the deleted scenes, specially the parking fight. The Frank Sinatra score in the courtroom was a great idea. I also liked the returns of Lucy McClane, I don't know why she was cut in the official extended cut. Her presence adds some kind of family reunion touch.
From all the Die Hard 5 cuts, this one is definitely the best to go with.
It now does look and feel like a real Die Hard movie, not the best one, but we already knew that.
This is my new go-to version and it salvaged that movie for me considering I used to despise it at some point. The editor did an awesome job combining both versions of the movie and the deleted material. It makes the movie more consistant and much more fitting with te others.
The recoloring was very welcome and that Sinatra song... It felt so good and it had no right to work so well, but it did !!! So thank you and congratulations on such a brillant idea, it sets the tone for the entire movie.
I was a bit on the reserve about the punching sound effects on the deleted car park scene after reading some comments but it was not distracting in the end and it has nothing to do with the fan editor.
I have one nitpick though at the end, I would have ended the movie just after Lucy starts running and right before the slow motion silent talking and made the rolling stones song kick earlier to replace the orchestral soundtrack, a bit like in the fourth movie. But that's just me and rest assured that this edit is the greatest version that this movie can be.
So to anyone reading this, go for it, that movie has been redeemed !!! Thank you very much Malthus ! :-)
Definitely worth a watch for any Die Hard fan left wanting after this mediocre entry in the franchise. The color regrade is a huge improvement. Keeps the gritty tone, but makes it far more realistic. The addition of the deleted scenes adds much needed texture that the theatrical cut lacked. Feels much more like a Die Hard movie, for which I'm thankful. Overall, an excellent improvement on the original source.
The editing is top notch. The visual grading is much better they the original and the score is now really fitting the picture like an epoxy mixture. The only thing I find it funny is the sound effects in the deleted carjacking fight scene. Other than that, everything's good. I enjoyed it.
