John Carpenter's "The Thing" from 1951

Incredible from concept to execution. I listened to the dramatic audio track because I love those '50s sci-fi theremins, and it was such a great accompaniment to one of my favorite films. Reframing to 4:3 allows for some clever reveals and really made the edit pop for me. Perhaps it was only my familiarity with the original that made some of the efforts to mask non-'50s props and plot points jump out a bit - though I loved Palmer's pipe at the "chariots of the gods" line! Great work here, and I'd love to see others in this vein (though I suspect none would work quite as well).

Watched this with my partner last night. She's never seen the original. The heart of this movie isn't the gore or creature effects, but rather the displays of complex lateral thinking our characters need to work through to stay one step ahead of the thing (or at least attempt to). I was relieved to see all of those elements were faithfully translated to the new format. There is/was a risk it could have been too campy.

I've marked video editing as a 9.0 not because the final stop motion clip was too blurry, but rather because it was the only scene that looked that way. I thought it fit the moment well, but if some of the earlier scenes were intentionally muddied in a similar way, it might not have been noticed. A bit like jazz: If you make a mistake, make it again on purpose so it seems intentional. :)

Inventive rework of Carpenter’s masterpiece and the Arrow Parallel idea including its attached lore is entertaining.

All I can say is man this was/is a good one. At times I thought I was watching a 75 year old movie, but then I had to remind myself that it is only a 45 year old movie. I remember when this originally came out, it scared the crap outta me. And I love horror movies. I am also a Kurt Russell fan. But the one thing I have always hated about him is that he has great hair. Well call me jealous but that's a crutch I must bear. Anyway, I love the "oldness" of this title. It feels like it was originally done in the 50's. It has that vibe. I think the black and white along with the 4 x 3 works really well. And even though I know the movie pretty good, this version gave me some good jump scares. Well hell I might just have to watch this a couple more times. And on my popcorn scale I will give this a 7 out of 5. For me that's how good this edit is.

What can I say? It's a bold little experiment that succeeds in converting Carpenter's Thing into the product of a different time, the 4:3 damaged footage that somehow never feels like you''re missing anything, the added 50s sci-fi tracks and cuts are so good I can't even pick out an issue! The fact this comes in different tracks is a nice bonus, though I think the default option is the best one in terms of authenticity to the idea. It's a bold new way to experience one of Carpenter's best movies, an edit definitely worth watching if only out of curiousity.
