While I'm certainly glad that CGI mess of a third act was removed, there were still some minor issues with the narrative stemming from its removal. In the theatrical, the robot bug was placed in Logan's body by Viper. In this edit, how it got there was a mystery because of Viper's removal from the narrative.
I liked that the fight with the ninjas and Harada was re-contextualized to be almost like a fight between suitors of Mariko's affections- as Harada was a former lover of her's- but Harada's fate was never revealed in this edit, though it could be presumed Logan had killed him.
The transition from the snowblower explosion to the final dream sequence with Jean Grey was well done, but it took me a couple of rewatches of the scene to get that Logan had caused the explosion to take out the ninjas, then it knocked him out long enough for him to have his vision of Jean, and then he recovered to get Mariko, which then transitioned to the airport scene.
Overall, a very well done edit, but I feel removing some of the characters and removing the original third act and replacing it with the new one created its own share of narrative problems. It's still very much recommended, and I enjoyed it much more than the original.
An extremely well executed edit, and a significant improvement over the original. The only downside is the end feels a little abrupt, only because there isn't material to extend it further. All of the cuts were completely seamless, and everything looked and sounded great to me.
I've always had a soft spot for this film, so having this alternate version exist, and be executed so well, is a great thing.
I have always held what seems to be the prevailing opinion that James Mangold's The Wolverine was one terrible final act away from greatness. This edit proves my faith right. By keeping the focus on Logan's story and rebirth it makes a much stronger second act in the story of The Wolverine that makes me regret that it didn't get a true sequel before the story's end. The edit obviously can only do so much - using a mention of studying biology to explain away some plot details and some dialogue removal to somewhat explain away the rest. It is however, much better than the studio mangled theatrical cut and will be the version of this movie I revisit in the future. There's only one thing that I wish made it into this version - the alternate ending!
A great edit! That finale with Yashida come back to life was always a downer to me, so excising that entirely really helps the film. A lot more small scale, just focused on Logan dealing with his trauma through protecting someone. It’s not a perfect edit, as only what was released on blu-ray was available, not the raw footage, but what was accomplished here was awesome. It was tightly paced, audio and video transitions were excellent, and the story was much stronger. I wish Mangold could have released his original vision. At least we got that with his later Logan.
If this was the theatrical cut then I’m certain we would have had more films of Wolverine in Japan, because this edit was fantastic.
No more silly silver surfer or ridiculous battle scenes, instead just a a more localised storyline one a much smaller scale.
The only critique would be for the unexplained ninjas, but I guess they can be passed off as being yakuza or something, but there just wasn’t really an explanation of why they wanted to take over the company. I don’t recall if the theatrical version did it better.
Anyway, excellent job!
