Brief Synopsis:
'The Penultimate Cut' is named because it's supposed to be one step back from 'The Final Cut'. Ridley Scott's final/ultimate version of 'Blade Runner' but how it used to look and feel.
Intention:
I appreciated Ridley Scott's 'Final Cut' effort to "perfect" Blade Runner but I really hated the processed, smoothed and heavily teal-tinted new look. I wasn't satisfied watching the old version in Laserdisc quality and I wasn't satisfied watching the new version in HD with the changed look. So 'The Penultimate Cut' takes the better looking 'Director's Cut' transfer and regrades it to look like 'Blade Runner' looked on the last 1999 video release before it was "remastered". Most but not all of 'The Final Cut' fixes are retained (including all wire removals), plus all of the editorial decisions. It's basically what I always wanted 'The Final Cut' to be. It only took me 5-years to complete!

(Tracks 7-20/24-30 have been edited, extended and remixed to sync them with the FC. Efforts have been made to maintain as much of the unique qualities of these mixes, although some portions had to deleted because there was sometimes no corresponding footage in the FC.)
Editing Details:
First I regraded 'The Director's Cut' blu-ray transfer to match the varied, rich, warmer colour palette of the 1999 DVD transfer of the DC, before the DC was first "remastered" and altered in 2006. Then I recut this new HD DC "master" to match 'The Final Cut' sequence of events, added in shots from other sources like 'The International Cut' and 'Workprint', blended in some small elements from the 1999 DVD that had been changed in 2006 and finally I put the subtle FC fixes back in, such as wire removals and continuity fixes. I didn't add back all of the changes, as I deemed some unnecessary and distracting.

Then I moved on to editing the audio tracks. The FC mixes of course still synced right up but the other 24 tracks have been cut and extended to match. I've tried to preserve the uniqueness of these alternate mixes where possible and I wanted to present pre-2006 mixes as an option where possible (not possible in the case of the 'Workprint'). A new isolated score track was also created, as close as I could get. Fan commentary tracks are also included, edited to sync up an mixed with movie audio.

- All wire removals added from the FC.
- Haven't detailed each time I broke shots down into multiple layers to fix different parts of the frame and adjust colours separately, as that's the majority of shots in the movie. The cutlist below only details the more notable changes.
- One of the FC fixes I haven't applied was the removal of the blood on Deckard's face before his fight with Leon (a continuity fix because it originally occurred after). Harrison's performance in the scenes shows him dabbing blood from his nose, so removing one spot on his face was pointless. I think everybody previously just excepted that he received the facial injuries when Zhora assaulted him anyway.
- Also a couple of minor changes to the background in the final fight and a shot of the spinner approaching the Tyrell building didn't need fixed.

I saw this a few months back, forgot to leave a review. It really looks amazing, the colour and quality are elite. The amount of work that has gone into this is impressive. Not to mention there's several dozen audio tracks to pick from. This is on the level of a Criterion release and can easily replace the original(s). Highly recommended for all fans of the original.

I’ve watched (many times) Blade Runner on VHS, DVD, Blu-ray, and I got to see the DC at the cinema - and this is by far the best looking version of the film without a doubt. Absolutely sterling work by TM2YC!

There isn’t really anything to add - the scores I’ve given are very well deserved. If I could get this fan edit on Blu-ray, it’d replace my FC disk in an instant :)

Honestly, I can't keep all of the different versions of Blade Runner straight in my head. All I can say is that the Penultimate Cut is wonderful.

It looks great. It still has all of the little fixes from The Final Cut, while being beautiful to look at, which is a big factor in the enjoyment of a visual film like Blade Runner.

I really appreciate all of the care and attention to detail that went into this edit. Great work!

Blade Runner was never a “perfect” film (I mean, how many official versions, let alone fanedits, are there?), but this is far and away the best version of this stone classic cinematic achievement you’ll ever see.

I got the Final Cut blu ray years ago, and was one of those people who instead received an accidental workprint in the blu ray box. Followed the instructions, sent in for a replacement, waited weeks, got it, watched it once, and promptly discarded it, thinking at the time Ridley pulled a Coppola “Redux” and took his film one step too far.

The gratuitous gory closeups Scott added remain (the owl worked better), but in this presentation I am so enamored with this labor of love in relation to its respect in particular for the 1999 DVD that the blu ray is now in storage.

This edit is up there in Adywan territory; it is so lovingly and reverently crafted, the edits seamlessly integrated and “invisible”, the intentions solely focused on the strengths of the original, that I cannot stress enough its successes. They’re there because you’re unaware.

Bravo, and thank you, sir, for paying such reverent respect to this classic in a way Sir Ridley himself had a blind spot to.

What can I say that hasn't already been said? This is one of the best edits I've ever come across anywhere. The quality is amazing, the movie feels fresh and beautiful and new, and there's even SUBTITLES, PEOPLE! The color balance is fantastic, which I really appreciated. Incredible work by TM2YC.
