Brief Synopsis:
Valerian - No Love Lost Edition removes all the forced romance plot and leaves a tight sci fi/fantasy adventure featuring two intergalactic dimension traversing agents on a mission to recover a precious item.
Intention:
As a fan of The Fifth Element I was very excited when I heard Luc Besson was doing an adaption of Valérian and Laureline. When I final saw his film I, like many critics, loved its visual panache but loathed the forced romance plot line. The problem was two fold. Firstly there simply wasn't any on screen chemistry between Dane Dahaan and Cara Delevingne. Although both were more than serviceable in their roles in the movie there simply was no spark between them. Secondly the film labours the point when it comes to the love story. It is referenced so frequently that it only serves to amplify its awkwardness. The sad thing is that beyond that one albeit large and distracting flaw the rest of the film is a triumph. Thus the reason for this edit.

The original is one of my wife's favorite films but I found it lacking compared to my love for the fifth element. This edit fixed a lot for me! Though i do believe more could be done and Rihanna could be completely cut. I like that the love angle is cut bc their interactions always felt more bother/sister and when you cut it their chemistry works so much better. There was some confusion about how the alien ended up in him bc of the new narrative but its negligible compared to the abrupt wardrobe change you just have to roll with lol

Another stellar Malthus offering, this time with very challenging subject matter. A meandering story, incredible visuals and poorly matched actors take the stage. Malthus removes the awkward romance, focusing our attention on the main plot, which works nicely. Movie is now coherent, if not always enjoyable and Valerian is tolerable as a character in this version, which is a herculean effort. Well done fix!

I liked this version and think the changes improve upon the original. The edits were unnoticeable and the plot flowed better overall. I highly enjoyed and recommend this version.

The changes made to Valerian are seemless. I could not tell where the cuts were made and had to go back and watch the original to make a comparison. This beats the original cut easily. The weird romance and constant mentionings of marriage are gone which is great. That part of the film seemed so forced and awkward. My one issue was I felt a lttle confused when we learn he was possessed by the spirit of a dead alien in this cut.

Overall Malthus' edit is far superior to the original, but I don't think there is any way of saving this film for me. Even without the horrible love plot the writing in this movie is still pretty bad, and the acting of the each lead just takes me out of it. But while I absolutely hated the original, I did enjoy this much more. Malthus did an incredible job here.
The world and visuals are still amazing. Video and audio quality is great (though the credits were weirdly loud. I had to turn it way down). Much less cringe and better pacing throughout. Editing is tight and I didn't notice any cuts for the most part, except for Bubbles' removed death scene, which I saw a tentacle coming out for one shot. I wasn't sure if that was on purpose.
This edit is a tremendous upgrade from the original, but I'm not sure any amount of editing can turn this movie into a great one for me. If you liked the original I think you'll love this edit.
