Brief Synopsis:
This edit featured a restructured narrative and 9 reinstated deleted scenes
Intention:
Thor is a great character but I always found his debut a little lackluster. For me the real issue was the films structure. The choice to front load the movie with huge Asgardian set pieces meant the second act drags. My edit aim was restructure the film and create and air of mystery around Thor. Having proved the concept of this edit with the original SD version of this edit I wished to rebuild it in HD using the blu ray source. This allowed me access to deleted scenes previously unavailable to me

Main aims:

#1 Reorder the narrative
#2 Reinstate several deleted scenes

#1 'Thor: Odinson' is an attempt to maintain an air of mystery around Thor and leave the audience to question whether he truly is the son of Odin. In the original when Natalie Portman finds Thor in the desert she questions where he came from leading the viewer to immediately be shown Asgard in all its glory. This edit will delay that reveal until Lady Sif and the warriors three arrive on earth effectively switching the first and second act.

#2 There are some wonderful deleted scenes which add development to both Thor and Loki. I reinstated nine deleted scenes in this edit.

I was an early previewer for the mortal-sized edition of this, and my review for it is here: https://ifdb.fanedit.org/thor-odinson/reviews/?user=34747. One of my main issues was in wanting several of these deleted scenes back in, so it was a joy to have that here. My thoughts on how the film feels generally are here: https://letterboxd.com/nottheacademy/film/thor/1/

As far as the specific editing as a fanedit, I have to say that this starts off great, with a cool new "Malthus Fanedits" intro. Early on, we're then given a deleted scene where they check Thor into the hospital which...eh, honestly goes on too long. It's not very funny, so I'd trim that. Later, Thor and Selvig's deleted scene when they get drunk is reinstated, but their actual drinking is trimmed. I loved the bit where they start drinking and then get into a bit of an accidental pissing contest, so I would've kept that rather than them suddenly knowing some coordinated dance.

When the film eventually shifts to Asgard (and where else are you going to put that prologue backstory, haters? Deal with it) we get several partially reinstated pre-coronation scenes, which are all great! They're trimmed well to ensure the pacing isn't bogged down, and the completed visual effects for the scenes look flawless. As far as that prologue that some people mention confused them at first, perhaps just adding some text on screen like "Odin, Father of Thor and King of the Realm" would sort that out for them? Regardless, whatever quibbles someone might have should be well made up for by the reinstated Loki "coronation" scene, my biggest issue with the previous version of this. It is an absolutely VITAL scene for understanding Loki, and it makes this film even better.

IF I were to quibble with this... I would say that some of the scenes on Asgard or Jotunheim in particular might be a bit dark. Were the levels adjusted? The music can also sometimes feel too loud, making some dialogue (especially in Asgard) hard to hear. And the final act on Earth doesn't quite flow as smoothly as the rest. I think the edit in the previous version of how the Warriors 3 rejoined Thor worked better. The reinstated Warriors 3 on Earth scenes are good, but I miss their arrival scene where Sif really shines. I would have given up the saving Selvig scene (which was...fine) to get that back in.

All in all, this is a replacer for all versions of Thor that previously existed. While I might personally alter a couple things, it's undoubtedly a fantastic achievement in fan-editing.

This is undoubtedly the most enjoyable version of this movie I've ever seen. The restructured narrative works wonders to bring out the best in the characters and tone at the outset of the film to invest viewers in the story and the characters. The deleted scenes, especially those with Loki deserve their place and they have been restored beautifully. That said, the point where the narrative flashes back to cover the skipped first act struck me as jarring and the following scenes felt too much like the start of a film to work for me in their given place. The prologue about the Frost Giants narrated by Odin I feel needs cutting entirely or restoring to the front of the film for it to work. The warriors three and lady Sif showing up unexpectedly was also jarring, especially following an audible cut between it and the previous scene seconds earlier. It feels like you should already know them at this point. My suggestion would be moving the transition point back a scene to Thor's talk with Jane about his past and reuniting Thor with his friends as a bridge from their part of the story back to the present. But that's just me.

Overall a very enjoyable watch after which I could never return to the theatrical cut. So mission accomplished.

I really enjoyed this cut, the narrative flows much better this way. The only thing I have to criticize is that the Asgardians showed a little too early but I doubt there was any other way to do it with just cutting. But from now on, I will only watch this cut when I move the movie again.

It was enjoyable and much funnier this way.

Great fan-edit. The insertion of deleted scenes is seamless, and they really do add a lot to the story and character arcs. The changed structure works well, making the introduction of Asgard and the story of Thor’s exile much more powerful and dramatic.

I am not a huge fan of the Thor comics, and so I don't really have a dog in the fight regarding how well the films follows the canon -- although race-swapping Heimdall was bizarre -- or much investment in The Mighty Thor's mythos generally.

But I've liked this film since I first cracked open my BluRay box, and I like it even more now. This is definitely my go-to version. Thank you.

This is my second edit to have watched from Mathus and again does a brilliant job. The restructuring of the narrative was seamlessly done and really enhances the story and makes us feel more relatable to the human characters like Jane and Eric (where they're sceptical of Thor) and in turn makes the reveal of Asgard feel so much more grander. The deleted scenes were implemented rather impressively and makes you question why the hell it was cut from the theatrical release. My overall viewing experience for this edit actually made me like Thor 1 more than before.
