Forcing both complete narratives into one didn't work properly, the limited choice of scenes available to switch between camps left me confused on more than one occasion, major flow issues where it ends at one camp with them inside and the next scene is a shot of outside with everyone leaving. Did they all just leave? Where are they going? Ah, we're in the other camp now. etc. It felt unnecessary.

And another example, when it switched back to the Norwegian camp after an intense scene at the US camp and she's looking through the drawer for keys, only to have the thing behind go straight into chasing again. That just didn't work without the tension, without that small build up of the lady asking for the keys and pointing fingers at others to gain some trust. It would have been better to skip that and transition to when the guy comes with the flame thrower, he doesn't want to open the door and when he does it's a horrifying shot of her consuming some poor dude on the floor. And why include the continuity error of both camps finding the same ship in different locations? There was no need for that.

Overall I appreciate the effort, but for sure I'd love to see another revision again, one that skips the majority of the newer thing. We already know the norwegian camps fate at the beginning of the movie so we don't need to see every single death, the narrative should be mainly focussed on how the next camp is going to make it out of there and that would allow for a lot more seamless transitions, especially if there's something like a death counter for the Norwegian camp, since we all know they die anyway, it's just letting us know how close they are to being wiped out, maybe even taking some creative liberty and make the norwegian camp black and white with scan lines, it might work nicely and I suggest it mainly to mask that dodgy cgi the new one has.

Either way, much appreciated Wraith, top class effort.

highly, highly recommended! I watched this twice, once in its original form alone and a second time with a friend with a tasteful black and white filter (which obviously isn't part of the original edit). Both experiences were very enjoyable, deliberate and intriguing renditions of the source material. The cuts are all placed very well in my opinion, never swapping movies at frustrating moments while still keeping investment in both narratives very high. Of particular note to me was the reveal of the ice slab containing The Thing and the buildup to its significance through multiple clever scene transitions across the two films. Overall, very impressively done! The original title and logo work was also very excellent.

However, I feel it somewhat loses steam at the end. It focuses progressively more attention on the 1982 film the closer the viewer is to the climax, which I think was the only viable decision. But there is still a sort of futile irritation when the story jumps back in time during the third act, and its hard not to feel like the inclusion of the backstory hardly impacted anything after the resolution. This is a problem moreso with the idea of the fanedit than the fanedit itself; taken in comparison with the 2011 film, this treatment of that film's material is still a much better contribution to the The Thing narrative.

Overall, highly recommended! An excellent and mostly seamless blend.

Overall this edit was well executed. (I watched the Version 2 which fixed a couple technical errors.) It’s obvious that Wraith put a lot of thought and effort into it, but for me it was hard to get through. Putting the stories side by side slowed down the pace so much that it wasn’t too entertaining after a while.
