Brief Synopsis:
The Dark Knight Rises has some of the strongest elements of the trilogy, but is ultimately weighed down by its bloated running time, illogical narrative (especially in the 3rd act), jokey one-liners, and arguably, the failure to stick the landing in the film's final moments. This edit aims to strip down the finale of Nolan's trilogy to its core, emphasising the stronger aspects of the story and hopefully offering a more emotionally satisfying conclusion to Batman's story as a whole.
Intention:
This series of edits intends to streamline Nolan's Batman films, keeping the tone consistent throughout and emphasizing the strongest elements of the series.
Special Thanks:
Dwight Fry and INH5 for their wonderful ideas and feedback.

Cuts and Additions:
GENERAL GOALS:
- Keep the movie moving, and remove scenes/characters unnecessary to moving the plot forward.
- cut out Deputy Commissioner Foley and Selina's girlfriend from the movie as much as possible.
- Simplify Bane's plan. He wants to terrorize and destroy Gotham, as has always been the plan of the league of shadows.
- Removal of all references to Occupy wall street/99%, rich being overthrown by the poor, people's court etc.
- Decrease Batman's poorly performed dialogue where possible.
- Cut back on needless exposition/bad jokes.
- Make the police less stupid.
- Reconstruct the ending to have Batman actually die. No Hollywood happy endings.

FULL CUTLIST:
- Cut CIA agent’s, “Why does he wear the mask?”. That’s the question you’re willing to threaten someone with death for? Now he just says, “Tell me about Bane.”
- Cut Mayor’s, “Now there’s talk of repealing the Dent act, and to that I say, not on my watch”
- Cut almost all scenes throughout featuring Matthew Modine’s Deputy Commissioner, Foley. His character is grating and smarmy, adding little to the film’s central narrative.
- Simplified Gordon’s speech, cutting “I have a speech telling the truth about Harvey Dent, maybe the time isn’t right. Maybe right now all you need to know is that there are 1,000 inmates in Blackgate prison as a direct result of the Dent act. These are violent criminals, essential cogs in the organised crime machine.”
- Cut Alfred’s story to Bruce in the Batcave about going on holiday during his absence, hoping to see him there in a café happy with kids and family.
- Cut all scenes of Selina’s girlfriend, as she adds literally nothing to the plot.
- Cut “Call me” joke, after Selina tells congressman to keep pressure on his gunshot wound.
- Cut Bane’s henchman searching Gordon in the underground lair. Bane’s reading of the speech has been deleted later, so no need to see it revealed here.
- Shortened dialogue between Bane and Henchman, cutting “The water runs to any one of the outflows”.
- Trimmed Selina and Bruce’s dance conversation, cutting: “I take what I need from those with more than enough, I don’t stand on the shoulders of people with less.” “Robin Hood?” “I think I do more to help people than most of the people in this room, thank you.” “You think maybe you’re assuming too much?” “Maybe you’re being unrealistic about what’s really in your pants other than your wallet.” “Ouch.”
- Also cut “There’s a storm coming Mr Wayne. You and your friends better baton down the hatches, because when it hits, you’re gonna wonder how you could have lived so large, and left so little for the rest of us.” “Sound like you’re looking forward to it.”
- Cut Lucius mention of Miranda being “quite lovely”, and “we all just want what’s best -for you Bruce.”
- Cut all references to the Bat’s autopilot when Lucius shows Bruce “The Bat”.
- Cut Alfred’s, “Sometimes, something rises from the darkness”
- Cut unnecessary exposition: “Your mentor.” “Bane was a member of the league of shadows?” “And then he was excommunicated.”
- Changed Alfred's, "Any man who is too extreme for Raz al Gul" to "Any man who was trained by Raz al Gul.", since I have deleted all references during exposition of Bane being excommunicated from League of Shadows.
- Cut stockholders talking about stock prices: “Wayne coming back is change. Change is either good or bad. I vote bad.” How did you decide? I flipped a coin.
- Cut Foley and banker conversation outside during Bane’s attack. “I’m not risking my men for your money” “It’s not our money, it’s everybody’s!”
- Cut one shot of police cars arriving at the scene, and a shot of snipers on the roof.
- Cut Henchman’s: “They cut the fiber. It’s still working” Bane: “For now”.
- Cut cops “shoot the tires! There’s no shot…”
- “Cut Foley’s, “Back off, back off they’ve got hostages!”
- Cut policeman’s “What’s wrong with the lights?” “”What the hell was that?” Oh boy, are you in for a show tonight son!”
- Cut cop nervously shooting batman’s ECG gun, “Sorry…” “Put that thing away before you hurt yourself!”.
- Cut Foley and Blake’s dialogue, “I’m gonna do what Jim Gordon never could” “What’s that?” “I’m gonna take down the Batman!”
- Cut “Sir, but what about the armed robbers?”
- Cut, “He’s getting away!” “Who do you wanna catch, huh? Some robber, or the son of a bitch you killed Harvey Dent?”
- Cut, “We lost him” “How could you lose him?” “He’s got a lot of fire power.” “What and you don’t?”
- Cut, “He’s heading downtown.” “Then he’s as dumb as he dresses. Close it off gentlemen.”
- Cut Dagart’s needless exposition to Catwoman: “The ultimate tool for a master jewel thief!”
- Shortened dialogue between Batman and Catwoman, cutting “See you around!” “You’re Welcome” “I had it under control” “Those weren’t street thugs, they were trained killers. I saved your life. In return,…”
- Cut Batman’s joke: “Ms Kyle? So that’s what that feels like…”
- Cut Alfred’s “I see the power of belief”
- Cut bruce/Alfred, “You said he was excommunicated.” “By Raz al Gul. Who leads them now?”
- Cut Bruce arguing with Selina’s girlfriend outside her apartment
- Cut Batman to Selina, “I acquired it to keep it out of the wrong hands”.
- Cut Batman to Bane, “You were excommunicated by a gang of psychopaths”
- Cut Foley and Gordon’s, “remind me to tell detail to keep hot heads out” and “we could use some hotter heads around here!”
- Moved scene of Blake visiting Gordon in hospital to discuss the tunnels and getting a promotion to detective to after the Batman/Bane fight.
- Cut Miranda and Bruce’s rain-soaked love scene/dialogue by the fireside at Wayne Manor.
- Cut Blake knocking at Wayne Manor with no answer.
- Cut Dr Pavel’s stating the obvious, “This is now a 4 mega-tonne nuclear bomb!”
- Replaced audio/music/sound effects for football stadium and bane’s bomb reveal scenes.
- Cut Star Spangled banner before football match.
- Cut some of the explosions around the city to keep the pace moving
- Cut one of the wide shots of bridges being blown up.
- Cut “take control. Take control of your city!”
- Cut “now we come here not as conquerors but as liberators to return control of the city to the people”.
- Cut “Tomorrow you claim what is rightfully yours”.
- Cut CIA’s exposition: “Pull back the fighters, start high level reconnaissance flights, get the president on the line”.
- Cut “tanks and planes cannot stop us from detonating our device. Send and emissary to discuss turns of access for supplies and communication.
- Cut “Bane says he’s given Gotham back to the people. They need to know I could lead.” - Also “Bane would lever let that happen” “He’ll show his true colours” “and you’ll be dead”
- Substantially trimmed Bane’s monologue to the injured Bruce to exclude all mention of - Giving Gotham hope to create true despair (“There’s a reason why this prison is the worst hell on earth. Hope. Everyman who has been in here over the centuries has looked up to the light and imagined climbing to freedom. So easy. So simple. And like shipwrecked men turning to sea water from uncontrollable thirst, many have died trying. I learned here that there can be no true despair without Hope. So as I terrorise Gotham I will feed its people hope to poison their souls. I will let them believe that they can survive so that you can watch them clamoring over each other to stay in the sun.”
- Cut convo between Selina and girlfriend in wrecked house. “This was someone’s home. Now it’s everyone’s home”. There’s a storm coming remember, this is what you wanted.”
- Cut Blake and Orphanage director “Any news of the commissioner? The less you know the better” Also cut “how’re the boys doing?” “ok, they have some tv etc”

- Cut “There were people living upstairs.” “Round them up for judgement!”

- Cut Agent’s “It’s out over the bay, it’s clear of the city!”

- Cut wide shot of bridge blown up, and nuclear cloud in the distance.

Just re-watched this edit, some... oh gosh, close to 10 years later. Time really flies! My original review is still up, and on re-reading it I'm a bit surprised at how much I loved it. I definitely don't feel the same way as I did then. That said, I do think it's a strong improvement over the original. Bear in mind, this review is written is with the caveat that The Dark Knight Rises is, at it's core, a bad movie. Certain scenes would need to be entirely re-shot and re-written to fix it, so any kind of edit is only smoothing out the rough patches.

In brief- edit quality is quite good, barring a couple of sharp cuts here and there. Smart choices are made to streamline the narrative & villain motivations, which better emphasizes the good elements of the movie. Unfortunately, in the process some interesting ideas are lost. That said, it's much easier to watch than the original, so I would recommend this as a replacement the next time you watch the trilogy.

I thought that the smartest choices were made around Bane and Talia- I found Bane's portrayal as a terrorist/freedom fighter interesting in the original movie, but let down by the decision to almost retcon him into a goon. NJVC simplifies Bane's portrayal, which makes his motivations much clearer and the final reveal less confusing. Removing Talia's relationship with Bruce was a stroke of genius; I was absolutely amazed at how unnecessary it was. I did feel that the final 'sinking in the knife' speech to Bruce was a bit overlong in the new context, but that's a nitpick. Now, Bruce + Selina is the only romance in the movie, and it works great. They actually have a solid chemistry that was lost in the clutter of the original cut.

Another major change was making Wayne die at the end. I don't love this choice. The original cut was in part about the fact that the Batman was no longer a useful solution to Gotham's problems, and had become little more than Bruce's addiction. His arc was supposed to be about learning to lead a heroic life as Bruce, without the crutch of the Batman, though the original doesn't quite make it work. I don't know if it's possible to fix that, so I can see why NJVC chose to go against it by canonizing Blake as the new Batman. Unfortunately, a decent chunk of it remains (especially in the first act) which makes for an awkward experience when combined with the new ending. As mentioned, I liked the Cat/Bat romance in this edit, and now that it lacks a conclusion both Selina and the romance feel pointless. In this case, I prefer the original ending.

There are a ton of other smaller cuts as well- mostly minor stuff, detective Blake isn't named Robin anymore (thank god), Bane's little interaction with the boy singer on the football field, and a number of corny jokes and one liners. These usually work, but one that didn't was the removal of a little scene when Batman first appears- where an older cop tells a younger cop to 'watch this'. I thought it was a cute scene, but also, in the moment it weakens the reveal of Batman's return. I think the most obvious misstep of this edit though was it's removal of police/military cowardice & incompetence. Notably, the coward police chief subplot is removed as well as the scene where the military blocks a bus full of children from fleeing the island, even after it's too late to stop the bomb. Any kind of negative portrayal of US combat organizations is nearly unheard of in blockbusters, so it's a shame to see these elements taken out.

I still do prefer this edit to the original. Pacing is vastly improved, and again, the choices around Bane and Talia are huge improvements. However, it's not perfect, and I think it's a shame that it got as much positive acclaim as it did, as I fear that it prevented other editors from taking a crack at this film.

The Dark Knight was a phenomenal movie and in no way did I had the same expectations from the third Dark Knight film. Actually, when I first saw it in cinema I liked it, although I was "feeling" something was off, that I couldn't kind put my finger on because I was blinded by the excellent cinematography by Christopher Nolan. When I got past that, in future re-watch, I started to see aaall the problems with this movie and my enjoyment factor dropped to like a 5.

Technical wise, the audio and visual editing was great! I didn't noticed or "felt", at any scene, that something was tampered with. So job well done here.

On the narrative side of things, which is the most important for me, this edit was definitely an improvement. I believe the editor removed as much as it can be removed, without having the film feeling inconsistent and all over the place. I had watched a more aggressive edit before this and it didn't work at all. Also, excellent choice having the Batman die at the end. Better ending to this saga, since we are not going to see him again and with the way Nolan took things with the story. Be that as it may, it still felt as a slow burn, but not in a good way, plus, it still has a couple of my major problems with it, like Bruce/Batman retire for the past 8 years, after like a couple adventures as Batman, just because Rachel died. I mean, talking about throwing the whole ideology of why he became the Batman out of the window! Also the ridiculous way that Blake knows Wayne is Batman. I mean, what, orphans have a secret code or something and see through each other? I guess Wayne being the only one with the money to have all these "toys" or the fact that when he retired, the Batman retired also, wasn't pretty obvious. And some other things, but we are not here to criticize the film, but the edit.

I will say this, definitely check this edit out! I mean, if you want to have a closure when you rewatch Nolan's trilogy, this edit is the way to go! For me it will be. I haven't watched the editor's previous edits of the Dark Knight, because I love the originals, so I didn't have a reason to watch another version.

Thank you njvc and thanks to anyone who read my review!

I just finished the trilogy and this is the best of the three edits!

Audio and Video are perfect just like the other edits. The pacing was great, and it didn't feel like it was dragging anymore. The plot is not so bloated, the humor is toned back nicely, and the ending is so so much better! This edit gives a truly satisfying conclusion to the series. Loved the new ending and all the pacing fixes especially during the final scenes with the police fight in the snow.

I highly recommend this trilogy edit, but especially the third movie. Thank you so much njvc!

A great, tight, edit of DKR. Overall, a great edit of the trilogy. This Dark Knight Saga Recut Trilogy is a great alternative to the original Dark Knight Trilogy. They are a set of films I would proudly put on my movie shelf, and re-watch! Njvc, you did a great job, and I applaud you for your hard work!

Highly recommend this trilogy to anyone!

Njvc has taken an ambitious project and tried to fix some of the issues Dark Knight Rises had. I think many agree this movie was trying to tackle too much, but also at the same time there were missed tones. I did not like the fact Bruce Wayne would have retired for 8 years and though I really liked Tom Hardy's performance as Bane and thought Bane was a great character, the character contradicted itself in the sense is a terrorist? Freedom fighter? Then Bane was demoted to common goon (and not mastermind) under Talia's control, a let down for many.

In njvc's edit, the effort and cuts are good. I think there is quite a bit of improvement in the story and the pacing, but ultimately as much as I had hoped for this fan edit would fix the movie (and I was skeptical it could be saved given the reliance on source material), it is due to the source material that the movie could not be saved. I do recommend watching this cut, it is an improvement and the ending is bold, but it is not enough to be the movie we had hoped, wanted, and maybe hoped to deserve? :)

Well done though njvc, I look forward to your next edits! The editor's skills are not in question, the movie is seemless, even changes in dialogue go unnoticed. To the untrained eye, I don't think you can tell this was an edit and I do recommend watching this cut and for the viewer to make their own opinion if this is the movie they really wanted to see. Thanks njvc!
