All of the technical aspects of this edit were actually really impressive, but I felt a tad disappointed with the narrative decisions made. While the new narrative choices weren't hard to follow, they just tended to not be as engaging as the original I felt.
The fact that we know less about what happens and/or has happened between John and Kate takes away from the level of engagement for these characters. On the whole, the decision to remove most of the cheesier elements was a good decision, but it leaves the film feeling a little sterile and bland. On the other hand I really liked some of the smaller inclusions such as the final shot, the new music during the stripper scene (which was a great callback I thought), and the editing of the television scene during the party.
Overall this edit was a little disappointing since I'd heard good things about it, and I'm a little torn over whether it's an improvement over the original and whether I would recommend this fanedit for Terminator fans. Having said that all of the technical aspects were near faultless and my only qualms were with the changes to the story and mythology of Terminator 3.
I am one of the few who actually enjoyed Terminator 3 in its original form. Definitely, it had some failings but realistically, so did the previous two films in their original form as well.
Removing the love story between Kate and John, to me, removes a key, integral component of the film. Removing things like Ahnold putting on the male stripper's sunglasses, getting keys from the viser, Terminatrix grabbing Ahnold's crotch in the bathroom fight, Terminatrix looking at herself in the mirror, and a couple one-liners: great. Removing Kate as the focus for John's future is a mistake in my opinion. Doing that, causes the story to fall flat. Both prior Terminators had humans finding or re-discovering love to make them remember their humanity.
Video and audio quality is superb but the story is just empty when Kate is stripped of her love interest for John, which includes the discussion about kissing for the first time and meeting at the party. These two things also drastically remove the idea of fate from the film, which was the largest appeal for me. All great mythologies--Terminator being no exception--have that aspect and it is necessary to make John Connor transform into a "great military leader."
Aside from that, the pacing is excellent as the action just keeps coming. I would recommend making another version with Kate re-integrated.
I'm sure many will disagree as evidenced by the numerous rave reviews but I find the movie very lacking without that key component.
Technically awesome edit UA. I am a big fan of your edits, having also watched Echo, Predator Chronicles, and Jericho Cane, and currently have Die Hard 4 and Marvel 24 Ep 2 queued for download!! I have also watched the T-Hope edit of T3 and have to say that there are a lot of similarities, and while your edit is technically superior (a couple of minor jumps in T-Hopes editing) I did enjoy T-Hopes editing choices and narrative flow a little better. Just my personal opinion, but I think you were a little harsh on the cutting of the one liners!! Anyway, I am also stoked that such a great Faneditor hails from the land downunder, showing the world what us Aussies can do!… Keep up the great work, and looking forward to your Superman Returns edit that was previewed on Echo!
