Terminator 3: The Coming Storm

I appreciate Uncanny Antman removing the dumber moments of this movie, trying to bring the tone closer to the movies that came before. But at the end of the day, I don't think this edit changes enough to make it worthwhile going out of your way to watch. The movie itself just kind of undermines the point of the two previous movies. Unless you can get around that, this movie won't be worth watching. The original movies were about creating your own destiny and eschewing determinism. This movie just says, "Well, everything still happens anyway. There's no changing anything."

If Terminator: Dark Fate didn't exist, I'd probably be more inclined to recommend this edit because I would've thought it would be the best we were gonna get. But Dark Fate was basically the movie this should've been.

The editing itself on this is excellent. I knew when things were cut just because of remembering them from the original movie, but I didn't notice any jarring cuts or transitions. It all seemed very well done to me. Unfortunately, it just wasn't different enough. It still felt mostly just like the same movie but slightly better due to some omissions here and there.

Wow, so it had been a long time since I watched this film, but I just watched Terminator: Dark Fate and wanted to see how this fanedit compared... T3 does not hold up well. This edit does the equivalent of open-heart surgery on the film...but now that it's resuscitated, we can see we should've just euthanized it. (More on Dark Fate at the end...)

No fault of Uncanny Antman's, he did a really admirable job on this edit. The problem in this film is just fundamental plot level, where the “conveniences” pile up hard and fast from the start…
-the “female” TX happens to appear in a ladies fashion display (while all the male time travelers have appeared in neutral locations like an alley or desert)
-John has spent years being trained to be a total badass…but happens to crash his motorcycle tonight
-then he happens to go to the clinic where his old schoolmate works
-TX happens to make that one of her first stops, so she can trace John from his blood there
-And Kate happened to have an emergency call right when John was at her clinic
-etc., etc. The whole setup for the plot is just irredeemable.

Then there are all the problems with character development. UA has thankfully removed much of the dated and cheesy attempts at humor, as well as lots of moment of John whining or waxing non-sensically about destiny. He also excised the needless and unconvincing romance sub-plot. However, what's left is a film with poorly-defined, dry characters that don't really win us over. Arnold hammed it up as the T-850 at times, but a few lines like "I am not shitting you" got real chuckles from me. Without them, I didn't really feel anything during the film. So all we can do is focus on plot and motivation, which leads us to sit there bemused, saying:
How can the TX remotely control cars again? “Nanotechnology”? Way to use a sciency buzzword without understanding how that really works.
Why is John now a total “Please, I don’t want any trouble!” wuss? Has that been working for him all these years on the road?
Man, the relentless callbacks are annoying. There was a reason the T-850 wore sunglasses before. There was a reason he wore leather. Here, it’s just the recognizable uniform, so they make sure to put him back in it. Then there's Chekov’s power cell… oh, he has two of them for some reason? I’m sure that won’t be important to the plot later…

Whereas thematically the first 2 films are about self-determinism and the idea that you can change your future, this film sides with “destiny” and the idea that some things are bound to happen one way or another. So then how are we supposed to take John’s plan here of the T-850 that killed him driving him to stop Skynet from going online so that the T-850 never kills him…? Does it make any kind of sense to think that that’s even possible? John is all over the place on this. One scene, he’s saying “you know what you have to do, you know my destiny!” the next he’s all “the future is up to us, Kate!”
Didn’t they say in the previous films that Skynet didn’t know what John looked like because a lot of records were destroyed during the war? How then does Skynet know all about John’s lieutenants, and have a DNA sample of his?!
Wait, HOW did the T-850 manage to get into the heart of this military base?!
So the TX kicks the T-850’s ass but it has to look at itself in the mirror after? Really, guys?
Chekov’s power cell redux: hmm, so as predicted, the T-850 went all movie with no obvious reduction in power just so it could blow up that 2nd power cell in the TX…who somehow hasn’t been able to use her metallic shapeshifting all movie’s end. Wow, that’s convenient for him!

Okay, positives: they do have a couple rich ideas here, like Skynet using John’s attachment to the T-850 to get close to him. And I like that unlike in T1 or T2, you don’t know which side the T-850 is on from one minute to the next.
I also always thought the downer ending was a really brave choice, and there’s a lot of poetry in it. Not only does mankind create the AI and the robots that turn on us, but Judgement Day is accomplished by launching our own nukes at ourselves. It’s a strong message, and practically the only thing that justifies this film’s existence.

As far as the fanedit goes, there were just a couple changes that I had to take off points for. The first was the aggressively loud opening music. The others are narrative changes. Removal of dialogue when Kate has John caged up leads to a long, silent recognition scene that is about twice as long as it needs to be and feels pretty awkward.
The other big point is that in this edit Skynet of the future sends back the TX with the virus that creates Skynet? Well, that might be the greatest case of self-determinism ever. Or a total paradox…I’m picky about time travel logic, so this really doesn’t work for me.

In the end, this is almost certainly the best possible version of Terminator 3 that we could have (minus those couple tweaks I mentioned). It is far superior to the original film. But honestly, just go with Terminator: Dark Fate. It totally ignores this movie and is 10x better. This film is now like the T-850 says of himself: "I'm an obsolete design."

I've never seen Terminator 3. I've not avoided it, but the opportunity never came up and since it wasn't meant to be very good I didn't really seek it out. I'd heard a lot of good things about this edit though, so I decided to go out and buy a copy of the film just to check out The Coming Storm. So, Uncanny Antman's cut is my first experience of the film.

Visual editing - Almost perfect. There was only one cut that I noticed and that was when a conversation between John and the girl suddenly ends (having read the cut list afterwards, I'm assuming this is where they kiss or talk about kissing or something like that). It wasn't actually a bad cut. I wouldn't go as far as to describe it as jarring, but it just seemed fairly obvious that the scene was meant to play out longer. I watched this with four other people who had all seen the film before (although quite some time ago) and none of them found the cuts noticeable. One person spotted the convo cut at the same time as me.

Audio editing – fine. Nothing noticeable.

Narrative – here's where things fall apart. Obviously, I haven't seen the original movie (which I will be doing just to compare), but from reading the cut list and a couple of other reviews it sounds like there were scenes cut that would be responsible for hindering the narrative. One of the main issues is that characters just keep popping up out of nowhere without being properly introduced. The girl (I'm terrible with names), her father and her fiance could all have done with an earlier introduction. Maybe the scene that does this was cringy, I don't know, but regardless, if removing a scene is going to hinder the narrative then it's better to leave it in IMO. The whole Skynet thing seemed a bit out of the blue as well. The terminator clearly uploads something to the machines, but we don't know what. Things just seem to start going wrong and it's not exactly clear why. I'm assuming this probably has to do with the virus plotline which the editor chose to cut out a large chunk of.

Enjoyment – Never seen the original, but this certainly felt like it could have been a lot worse. Reading the cut list certainly made me cringe at what I potentially could have been exposed to. My chief concerns were with the narrative, but outside of that it was quite a fun ride. The film itself is pointless, but it has a good ending and it kind of fixes the plot holes created in T2 (if Skynet is stopped then John Connor never sends Kyle Reese back and therefore John is not born.).

So, why did I watch this before watching the original? Well, I had no interest in watching the original. But this edit was supposedly meant to make it good. So I thought, if I'm going to watch it, I may as well watch a version that I'm more likely to enjoy. I was also just generally curious to experience a fan edit of something I had no familiarity with; to see if I could tell that it had been tampered with and if I could spot cuts without having knowledge of what would have been removed. Turns out the narrative suffers quite a bit, and I'm not entirely sure this could have been given the go ahead as an official release - then again... fanedit.org exists for a reason :P . Despite apparent flaws though, I did enjoy it and it's sparked my interest in the theatrical release.

I imagine The Coming Storm is probably much better than the original movie, but after reading the cut list I'm also fairly certain stuff that shouldn't have been cut was taken out. I plan on watching the original for comparison, and then I will probably come back and update my review. Would I recommend this edit? That remains to be seen.

I haven't seen the original version since the last Terminator came out, so I don't remember it all that much. I intentionally didn't read the cutlist as well.

What I saw was incredible. It's a completely different film altogether that stands up next to the first two. All the terrible dialogue, jokes have been seamlessly removed and minor continuity errors removed. I didn't notice a single edit anywhere.

Removing most of the Terminators' lines have made them more terrifying than before, they don't say a single word to each other the whole film, inline with the previous 2 films. Also taking out the short conversation with John asking about "Hasta la vista baby" makes him seem like he's just used to time-travelling robots at this point, a nice change.

Overall, a vast improvement over the original. This forever replaces the Rise of the Machines DVD sitting on my shelf.

Again Uncanny Antman knocks it out the park with this fanedit, almost all of the cheesy corny lines have been edited out from this movie,the T1000 acting like a woman GONE,the T800 and T1000 are now acting more like how the terminators acted in the previous movies. this version takes a movie that was packed with boob jokes,gay jokes and time travelling errors and turns it into highly enjoyable cat and mouse chase movie.

This is a must watch for terminator fans.
