I was hoping to get to this one sooner, but Covid blew me over! It had been a few years since I saw Super 8, which makes it both a perfect and terrible time to watch a fanedit. Perfect, because I'm not bored with the movie and watching analytically, and terrible because I'm less likely to catch seamless transitions (although that is a testament to the skill of the faneditor).

In this case, I only recognized two moments as new to this viewing: a scene where the kids are trying on different costumes, and a scene involving Officer Lamb investigating the gas station attack.

The costume-change scene didn't add much value to the story, but it was nice to see more of the movie. The gas station attack investigation scene, however, brought in a continuity blip, and it's the only reason I even noticed that it had been added.

Shortly after the attack, Officer Lamb is on scene at the gas station to investigate. And then, the next morning, he's back to investigate it again. Some of the dialog is recycled, which is why I even noticed. During the daylight investigation, Lamb is given a tip that leads him to the next scene. It makes sense for him to want to get a jump on things, after witnessing the vicious aftermath of the attack, rather than waiting until the morning, so I can see why the filmmaker's went with that version in the final cut.

Both scenes were added so naturally that I barely noticed their addition. If there were more additions, I flat out missed them. The movie was still as good as I remember it, in either case. The faneditor did an excellent job adding everything. If there were cuts, I didn't notice them.

One note, and the only reason I gave the overall audio/video quality a knock (8/10): so much of this movie takes place at night that, with a 4K or greater setup, any diminishment of the overall picture suffers greatly. I watched an HD copy, but missed the 4K resolution of my store-bought copy. Still, I'm very glad I watched. It may not be my go-to version of the film, but I'll certainly keep it on hand.

I realy enjoyed this one. Integration of the added scenes were seamles. It was some time ago that I saw the theatrical cut so I have to say that I couldn't figure out which where the added scenes. Which speakes for the extended cut I guess. I remember that I felt rushed at some points when Isaw the theatrical version. That didn't happen this time. The extended version makes this gem even better. Good job, Wraith. Thanks for the work.

The video quality is good, deleted scenes not standing out when watched on a (admittedly small) television, aliasing does crop up from time to time (noticeable mostly on fine horizontal detail) but this is not scene specific and quickly forgotten. Audio is great except for occasional blips where the deleted scene endings are spliced into theatrical cut footage.

Story-wise, while none of the reinserted scenes could be described as vital several of them serve to benefit the film. Isolated events are introduced earlier or followed up so they flow better and have greater depth, and it is just pleasant to spend more time with these characters in this environment. Little things like Joe asking Charles about Alice while in the shop (showing that he is interested in her from the beginning) and the extra detail he goes into while talking to her about his models that makes it feel as if he is dropping any guard that he would keep up around his friends. Upon looking at the theatrical version again, the absence of the full 7-Eleven scene also makes for a jarring transition whereas in the extended edition it cuts more naturally and makes me chuckle.

One reservation is that some new scenes repeat (or feature equivalent) dialogue present in the theatrical cut, at one point I believe this also introduces a plot hole (one character has an idea, then is surprised a minute later when the character he is speaking to has a very similar idea).

Overall though, this extended edition is a general improvement on the theatrical cut, thank you Wraith for taking the time to put it together!

This film was originally a highly entertaining period piece. Once more Wraith with extreme attention to detail has lovingly restored all of the deleted scenes back into this film seamlessly. Great work!, and my future version to share with family and friends. One can see where the inspiration for the tv show Stranger Things came from.
