This extended version of Super 8 expands the depth of characterisation and makes the characters increasingly more developed. The extended scenes also add a visual quality to the movie in the sense that they allow the narrative to flow more easily without the sudden jump-cuts that existed in the original cinema cut.
In essence, this version of Super 8 allows the audience to gain a greater 'feel' of the late 1970s (the movie was set in 1979/80) and the era when Close Encounters/Star Wars was all the rage - and in many respects, J.J. Abrams and Wraith [combined] have created a movie that brings back the nostalgia of that period of American history, albeit, with a storyline that has a considerably darker tone.
