Finally the last one, the end of my HAL9000's SW marathon.

On a pure editing and technical level, this is really impressive and can't be praiseed enough. From the force ghosts, to the SFX add-ons, and scenes ajustements. Everything works great, pretty stunning work from everyone involved.

On the other hand, it's by FAR the weakest SW in my opinion. The story doesn't make sense (looks a like a bad video game side quest), there's a lack a tension and epic scenes especially considering it's last one. Everything is written in reaction to the previous one, so it ruins the trilogy continuity...

You've done great work, as always, but I think this one can't really be saved, just better. Unlike the prequels (contained great stories but badly highlighted), it is a mediocre movie and a bad SW in his very core,

If I had to watch it again, you edit is clearly the way to go. But I don't think I will.

This review comes after two weeks of binge-watching your 10 fanedits (Rogue One included). And I can't thank you enough for all your hard work enhancing and sometimes saving thoses great childhood memories.

Your work is from now on, my official Skywalker Saga. Can't wait to watch them again.

Thanks for this great edit (even if the movie is really mid I think), and french subtitles as always.

HAL 9000 needs no introductions. He is one the best editors out there and actually one of the first editors whose work I saw, that being the Star Wars prequels, and that was actually how I found out about this wondeful world of fanedits (my very first being the legendary "The Phantom Edit" from the Phantom Editor).

His audio and visual editing is excellent, as always, I had absolutely no issue with any scene and wasn't expecting any. So the important part for me was the narrative, did he save the film for me?

Before answering that, I must tell you my opinion for the original. I "hated" it, both this and Episode VIII. I loved Episode VII, even though as we all know, the story was copy paste from the first one and some other minor issues. So, since I really disliked Episode IX, I knew that I needed aggressive edits, like what was done with the prequels, BUT, I wanted to first give a chance for redemption for the original...runtime/vision of Jar Jar Abrams. Maybe with a little trim and some rearrangement, something magical would happen!
Alas, no..

Don't get me wrong, HAL's effort was commendable and it took my enjoyment factor from a 2-3 that was originaly, to a 6, so that's definitely something! He made the film make more sense, put in order things that where out of place and enhanced others. Also, HAL is well known for trying to salvage films without aggressively tampering with them, unless it's necessary (Episode 1 wink wink), so I knew what I was in for. With all that said, unfortunately I still can't watch this movie, especialy the second half.

The reason I recommended this, is for everyone who found the original 'ok' and above. If you are that person, then this version is for you and your new go to version of the film! Me, I must search my feelings and give in to the dark side of the aggressive cuts, like the Anti-Cringe one.

Thank you HAL and thanks to everyone for reading and may the force be with you!

*This is a review of Version 2 of this Fanedit*

Let me start by saying that this is easily one of the most impressive fanedits I've ever seen from a technical perspective. The new FX work, supplied by multiple contributors, is excellent, and all of it feels like it has a purpose. The editing choices are also great: several sequences flow much better than the theatrical version of the film.

Nearly all of the cuts are flawless both in visuals and audio, although I do feel the way the conversation about lightspeed skipping is cut is a little jarring. I think it would have been a better choice to leave lightspeed skipping in the movie as is.

Overall, this fanedit takes a film I intensely dislike and makes the experience go down a little easier. Frankly, I think there are fundamental flaws with this film that would require major story changes to address, but for what it is, I think this edit as about as best as it could be.

Viewing the 30+GB version, video and audio quality are great, although there is some noticeable artifacting in dark scenes like the trek through the catacombs. The new color grade really brings the movie's visuals to life.

Quality is excellent. This looks and sounds great.

Visual editing is flawless, and regardless of whether it works for you or not, some of the FX work here is spectacular. Top tier fanediting.

I hate to say it, but there were a couple of audio moments that seemed a little off to me. Nothing jarring, just some moments where it sounded like two scores were clashing and probably needed smoothing a touch more. They are pretty minor, but they're there.

The original narrative... ugh. I'm not going to go into that in any real detail. But suffice to say that Rise was a sequel to what many fans wished for Episodes VII and VIII to be, but it was not a sequel to what those films actually were. Rise is an onslaught of jarring narrative choices, odd character moments and bad writing. Rushed production and erratic editing are the poison-icing on top of a badly-baked cake; one that has severe, foundational problems that are either unfixable or are going to take a hell of a lot of work/brainstorming.

But then here come Hal and friends to the rescue... Have they magicked Rise into a masterpiece? Absolutely not. But what has been achieved is a better paced, better looking, more enjoyable foundation for which many can build upon in the future. I did not enjoy TROS at all in the cinema - it didn't let me breathe, and it looked disgusting, but the trims and re-ordering of scenes here really works wonders in terms of being able to just sit and take in what is happening. Yes, it's still a little erratic at points (mainly the first act), but it's one hell of an improvement, and I dare say I actually ENJOYED watching it. The colour correction is also a masterstroke, and meant that I could actually appreciate some of the cinematography, rather than simply wishing it didn't look like someone had thrown up all over the screen.

Some other, very bold (yet easy to miss), editing choices have been made to strengthen the narrative. They will work for some and not for others. My problems with the film run deeper than any of the things these changes try to improve upon, and so I don't have any strong feelings about them either way. But I would say they meet their goal in fixing what they were designed to fix, and they are executed with Hollywood-level professionalism.

Enjoyment: I don't like this film. It's a bad film. BUT I like elements, aspects, scenes (Solo and Kylo, anyone? *chef's kiss*) - and this edit allowed me to realise that. It drew my attention to what there was to like and, overall, created something that (unlike the theatrical) I could actually fathom sitting down and watching for a 2nd time.

As always, Hal brings the best. Not his most ambitious cut, but it still manages to improve upon the original and actually create a fun watch. I still had plenty of plot questioning after viewing, but in the moment I actually had a fun time and didn't roll my eyes too much. There were some really brilliant moments here, love the inclusion of the group to the final tatooine visit.
