As someone who loved the original and was pleased to see a slightly longer version, I consider myself one of Adabisi’s target audience. This is an extended edition, pure and simple, but do the additions add to the original?

Well, I would say that they do. The new scenes give the viewer added insight into the characters. The scene with Somerset at the beginning strengthens the impression we have of him as a world-weary man with a yearning for a quieter life away from the city. The removal of a square of wallpaper provides a link with the following added scene in which Somerset talks to Tracy, who questions him about the square when it falls from his jacket – an opportunity afforded them by Mills’ playing with the dogs. This provides an explanation as to why Tracy so readily confides in Somerset later.

I do feel these scenes added to my enjoyment the movie. They were perfectly integrated into the film and more than fulfil the faneditor intention to create a slightly longer version of the film, for fans of the original.

Yet, this is not merely an extended edition for an extended edition’s sake. The editor has wisely chosen to resist the temptation to restore the alternate ending – “just because it’s alternate” – preferring the superior take from the theatrical version, and has omitted another scene that adds nothing to the film.

Editing: 10 out of 10 for the editing itself
Entertainment: 9 out of 10 (original – 8 out of 10 on average : I say average because a number of versions – of varying merit – have been shown)

Image and video quality: The video quality was excellent. 10 out of 10
Audio editing and audio quality: 10 out of 10
Presentation: There is nice cover art and a most excellent and fitting motion menu, but no scene selection menu. 9 out of 10

Overall: 9 out of 10

I devoured this extended edition of the original, and – while gluttony may be a deadly sin – I’d encourage other fans to do the same.
