Brief Synopsis:
Two main goals here, beyond just the general nips and tucks. ONE - Give the film more of an OT vibe with color correction, film grain, and new music throughout. TWO - Improve Anakin’s story. I find his fall to the dark side in the theatrical film to be rather sudden and unconvincing. So here my job was to sort of smooth out the kinks - trying to make Anakin more sure of himself and his allegiance to Palpatine before the turn, and then somewhat softening his words and actions after the turn. There’s a lot of subtle little changes and tweaks that went into this all across the film, but I do feel like the sum is that his story in this version is more believable.
Intention:
My intention started off as taking Hal9000’s edit and mixing it with the structure of L8wrtr’s edit (where the opera/Plagueis scene comes early, to establish the dark temptation right off the bat). Eventually the project morphed. The structure has some similarities to L8’s, but is mostly my own design which I spent a lot of time considering. Many scenes are based off Hal’s, but just as many changes are my own. My most radical change is removing the Order 66 montage, and just focusing on the main characters. The whole film has a new scene-by-scene (shot-by-shot when needed) color correction, along with a light film grain applied. Many sequences have been rescored (and, as a consequence, re-SFXed) to add in more of a classic Star Wars feel throughout.

This is a project some of you might be familiar with from originaltrilogy.com. I’ve been working on this in some form or another for the past five or six years. At first it was just a combo of Hal9000 and L8wrtr’s edits that I kept to myself, then over time I started incorporating more and more of my own changes and sharing them with others. I finally finished and released a V1 of this edit a couple years ago under the moniker “Dom’s Useless ROTS Edit.”
After much consideration and at the suggestion of others, I’ve decided to finally list it here with the release of version 2 which makes minor changes and provides some sound and color improvements. Ultimately I have to admit that the edit is not so “useless,” as I do think that I have made an edit that is unique enough to list on its own (which had kept me from posting here initially).
I hope you will enjoy my cut of the film. I have borrowed many ideas and even specific cuts from other edits but I have also put my own spin on quite a few different things, some radical, some subtle, and I personally think the film works better for it. This is the version of the film that I’ve always wanted to see, or at least the closest to it I can get.

Cuts and Additions:
* Scene by scene color correction and film grain applied throughout.
* New crawl, and new main title recording (Williams performing on the “Skywalker Symphony” album… V1 is from “Hollywood Sound”).
* Trimmed superfluous and awkward dialogue in the opening battle (following Hal9000’s lead).
* The vulture droid only fires two missiles - no buzz droids at all. Anakin gets them to blow each other up, set to the Rebel fanfare cue that used to accompany R2 taking out the buzz droid.
* A classic track from the original film plays as the Jedi make their daring landing on the Invisible Hand and fight the battle droids (thanks to aalenfae for the idea).
* Removed Obi-Wan leaping from his cockpit, and his little jump during the fight with the battle droids.
* The Jedi do not encounter droidekas, and the elevator sequence is gone. None of the R2 stuff.
* Dooku doesn’t do a flip, and Palpatine doesn’t warn the Jedi that he’s a Sith lord.

Anakin’s much surer of his opinions in this edit - the goal being, in every possible instance, when it comes down to Jedi vs. Palpatine he is firmly with Palpatine as a way to make his turn to Vader clearer (it’s a matter of allegiance).
* The next scene is Anakin summoned to the opera. Cut out mentions of Grievous and Anakin spying on Palpatine to fit this placement. The idea here is that right away Anakin is given a solution to the problem of his nightmares. It is of course not within the bounds of the Jedi, but everything that Anakin experiences in regard to the Jedi from them on only goes to make this option seem more viable. When we finally hear Anakin say “I’ve found a way to save you from my nightmares,” since it’s been so long before he told Padme that there’s such an option, we know that he’s fully considered the implications of that solution and going to go with it anyway (restructure inspired by L8wrtr).

This exchange helps to show Anakin has distrusted the Jedi to some extent since before this film.

I just wanted to say that this was a super refreshing way to watch this film and its narrative! Two points I wanted to make:
1. First and foremost, (in my opinion) Mr. Cobb most definitely made this film feel more in line with the original trilogy, primarily due to his tasteful inclusion of OT soundtracks sporadically throughout the edit.
2. The rearrangement of certain scenes, as well as the addition of the deleted scenes, makes Anakin's fall much clearer and easier to follow.
Thank you for sharing! I really enjoyed it! Would love to see you take a stab at TPM and AOTC, just so that we can see your vision of the PT as a whole!

Simply brilliant and by far one the best Revenge of the Sith edits I've seen so far. I love ROTS but it does have some problems that this edit fixes and unlike most other edits I've seen Dominic's stays true to canon. But the best part of this edit are the seamlessly weaved together rescores, Also the inclusions of the deleted scene were all well done and add alot more to the narrative.

What is there to say? By far the best edit of Revenge of the Sith out there. I believe this is the one that will satisfy the hardcore fans: it stays true to canon and seamlessly removes all of the excess while also reintroducing a series of absolutely essential deleted scenes, which I find exponentially better the movie.
All edits are TRULY invisible, and, especially music-wise, are all close to perfect, which is the hardest thing to do with the Prequels as the music is so exceptionally weaved together.
Last, but not least: the COLOR CORRECTION which is fantastic and brings the world slightly more in line with the one from the Original Trilogy, which is my main gripe with the original films...
Well done, well done, well done... but I can't avoid asking: will Episodes I and II be coming forward too?

Revenge of the Sith for me has become a movie that's hard to love, but this edit has definitely rekindled some of my fondness for it. With the new grading, some rescores, and the re-arrangement of the narrative - Dom's edit finds a pretty fun presentation of this flawed story without gutting it of a heart.
I loved the narrative order here, and how the Padme/Anakin scenes were implemented. Other edits often cut much of that love-oriented underpinning in favor of minimizing "cringe" or focusing instead on the political subplot, but Dom opts to ground the plot more firmly in it. I think it works well. The opera scene is moved up, and the Jedi/Palpatine politics that alienate Anakin come after he's already introduced to the dark side's potential. The progression towards the dark feels more stewed on and organic this way. It still never coalesces into the perfectly realized story, but that's more of the original movie's fault than anything else. I've been able to be forgiving of it when edits like this are able to pull off a more engaging and cohesive presentation. (And I would know how messy ambition with this movie can be.) As it stands, everything here makes sense and feels much more properly set up than the theatrical. And it didn't have to sacrifice an emotional throughline to do so.
The rescores are a big part of making the movie feel fresh and exciting to watch again. The original trilogy cues during the opening sequence add a sense a swashbuckling and idealism to this world about to turn, and it's surprisingly effective in contrast to the bleakness of what comes next. When the melodrama of Mustafar is happening, it's cool to have the memory of romantic adventure more readily accessible. It sort of works to highlight how far things have fallen.
The Order 66 redux with the OT score is also beautifully done, and implemented under a philosophy I wish I had more of when approaching my own edit. Cutting the rest of the Jedi deaths was something I thought I would miss, but this edit shows how distracting it might be to the main characters' arcs. In similar vein as the "Saving Padme" orientation, I like the commitment to the personal grounding of this.
That all said, as far as elements that didn't quite work as well, the inclusion of some of the political deleted scenes here are at odds with that intention. Only a bit. I've always had a complicated relationship with these scenes. They add a lot of (perhaps necessary) context for the characters to act against and react to, but they involve a lot of other moving pieces that scale the story broader than our three leads. Luckily, Dom doesn't use all of them and they are placed far better than I've typically seen, but I can't help but want to move on from them quickly when they pop up. But they still do a lot of the pushing for Anakin towards Palpatine, so it's hard to say. I think the right choices were made for clarity, either way.
The regrade is neat, but I think it looks too blue. Very well done and at points what I remember the movie FEELING like as a younger lad, but I don't know, it didn't fully work for me. It felt modern, when so much of this aspired to "vintage."
Overall, I really dug it! I'm not embellishing when I say this rekindled a good bit of my love for this film. It had been hard for me to sit through as of late, but there was just enough here to carry me through to the changes that enhanced what was there. Awesome work!
