Pulp Empire

Fan of Stars Wars franchise and the Tarantino style. This film is the best of both worlds. Told the whole Empire Strikes back story in a non linear way while being scored to great music. You can tell njvc took his time on this fanedit. You'll never see the seams in his editing. Choice of soundtrack fitted every scene.

I particularly enjoyed the character introductions in the Kill Bill style. Montage scenes from other Stars Wars episodes were integrated.

However the voice of Yoda replaced by Gordon Liu's in his part as Pai Mei in Kill Bill was off-putting. I dont think njvc is a Cantonese speaker. Yoda was speaking gibberish and the same sound bites from Pai Mei was used over and over again. I'm sure I was suppose to just ignore this and read the subs but I had to take a few points off from the rating for it. Gordon Liu' has dozens of movie out over the decades and there are plenty of lines to choose form but thats impossible if you cant speak the language. I sat through the film with a buddy that did not speak Cantonese, and he seemed to enjoy the scene better.

Overall, it's a must see for fan edit enthusiast and njvc has set a new standard of fanmixes with Pulp Empire.

I can't believe it took me this long to get to this one. This edit is perfect. It's an amazing piece of work. At first you might think it would be a weird homage to Tarantino by filling it with references, but the edit was far from it. It takes (imho) the best Star Wars film and makes it Tarantino-esque but only to a degree, because while Tarantino would have carried the film through to a 'cinematic' ending like in Inglourious Basterds, Kill Bill, Django Unchained; Pulp Empire evokes the old school Tarantino of Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction and Jackie Brown ilk, where you don't get that crowd pleasing finale but a thoughtful, resonating end that haunts you for a while. The Neil Young closing to this was absolute genius, the montage put together at theend--I've never seen anything like--it's actually why the prequels exist: for the three minute montage at the end of njvc's Pulp Empire. I loved the out-of-left-field music choices like (!) Bernard Hermann's Taxi Driver theme in lieu of the love theme, and the opening with Morricone's theme from the Lee van Cleef classic "Grand Duel" hooked me. Substituting Pai for Yoda was hilarious and worked perfectly. The best scene in the trilogy (Luke vs Vader) scored to Ecstacy of Gold was great!

Bottom line is--this isn't a simple re-edit or remix of the original. It takes the material and uses style to create something new entirely: that's where the "Tarantino" aspect comes in. But njvc has definitely made this his own by applying deeper meaning and ambiguity to the scenes. The linear cohesion of the original is gone, the story is absorbed upon reflection after viewing, and I personally love those kinds of stories. An amazing edit, and my personal favorite of any I've seen. Score 11/10

I was very skeptical about this edit at first. In fact, I only watched it because I was intrigued by the trailer and I loved the dubbing of Yoda. So I came back and watched a little more of the trailer. Chapter I is a little slow, although the introduction of Yoda is genius and no slower than the original, but I ended up watching everything and continuing with chapter II. That's when I was hooked. Chapter II is brilliant, a masterpiece. The introduction of Darth Vader with the flashback, the battle of Hoth with the use of slow-mo, the seamless editing, the perfect pacing. It all works great, even the music, which at first I thought was just for kicks, gives a superb atmosphere and blends in perfectly with all other elements.

Can't recommend this enough, I loved it.

Okay so if you're a die hard Star Wars fan, you're probably going to be confused by Pulp Empire! A couple of my mates watched it with me when I first viewed v1 and didn't know what to make of it. I absolutely loved this edit, and thought it was time I submitted a review considering njvc has released v2.

It's amazing what has been achieved here! It's not Star Wars as you know it, so don't expect that! It's not even a true Tarantino style film either, but for some reason it absolutely works here! I thoroughly enjoyed Pulp Empire and will continue to watch it to give me inspiration as a fan editor for motivation for my next project.

As a fan of both Tarantino and Star Wars, I found this concept both entertaining and fascinating. It was great to see Empire in a new light, and with such damn style too! Great inclusion of the animated scenes from "Clone Wars", and Vader's montage introduction was stunning (of course, each montage was pretty damn impressive). Soundtrack was great, although I could see one or two songs that Tarantino would never touch himself. This edit is definitely going to stay in my collection!
