I can't believe it took me this long to get to this one. This edit is perfect. It's an amazing piece of work. At first you might think it would be a weird homage to Tarantino by filling it with references, but the edit was far from it. It takes (imho) the best Star Wars film and makes it Tarantino-esque but only to a degree, because while Tarantino would have carried the film through to a 'cinematic' ending like in Inglourious Basterds, Kill Bill, Django Unchained; Pulp Empire evokes the old school Tarantino of Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction and Jackie Brown ilk, where you don't get that crowd pleasing finale but a thoughtful, resonating end that haunts you for a while. The Neil Young closing to this was absolute genius, the montage put together at theend--I've never seen anything like--it's actually why the prequels exist: for the three minute montage at the end of njvc's Pulp Empire. I loved the out-of-left-field music choices like (!) Bernard Hermann's Taxi Driver theme in lieu of the love theme, and the opening with Morricone's theme from the Lee van Cleef classic "Grand Duel" hooked me. Substituting Pai for Yoda was hilarious and worked perfectly. The best scene in the trilogy (Luke vs Vader) scored to Ecstacy of Gold was great!

Bottom line is--this isn't a simple re-edit or remix of the original. It takes the material and uses style to create something new entirely: that's where the "Tarantino" aspect comes in. But njvc has definitely made this his own by applying deeper meaning and ambiguity to the scenes. The linear cohesion of the original is gone, the story is absorbed upon reflection after viewing, and I personally love those kinds of stories. An amazing edit, and my personal favorite of any I've seen. Score 11/10

I was very skeptical about this edit at first. In fact, I only watched it because I was intrigued by the trailer and I loved the dubbing of Yoda. So I came back and watched a little more of the trailer. Chapter I is a little slow, although the introduction of Yoda is genius and no slower than the original, but I ended up watching everything and continuing with chapter II. That's when I was hooked. Chapter II is brilliant, a masterpiece. The introduction of Darth Vader with the flashback, the battle of Hoth with the use of slow-mo, the seamless editing, the perfect pacing. It all works great, even the music, which at first I thought was just for kicks, gives a superb atmosphere and blends in perfectly with all other elements.

Can't recommend this enough, I loved it.

Okay so if you're a die hard Star Wars fan, you're probably going to be confused by Pulp Empire! A couple of my mates watched it with me when I first viewed v1 and didn't know what to make of it. I absolutely loved this edit, and thought it was time I submitted a review considering njvc has released v2.

It's amazing what has been achieved here! It's not Star Wars as you know it, so don't expect that! It's not even a true Tarantino style film either, but for some reason it absolutely works here! I thoroughly enjoyed Pulp Empire and will continue to watch it to give me inspiration as a fan editor for motivation for my next project.

Thank you njvc for a brilliant piece of film art!

I have viewed this edit multiple times and have updated my review to provide a more unbiased critique.

I loved this edit simply for it's refreshing idea, originality and uniqueness. My initial viewing was done on Vimeo as individual chapters were released. After viewing the entire edit in one sitting, I would recommend breaking it up into chapters.

During multiple viewings, I found myself becoming bored anytime Luke or Vader weren't on screen. The entire plot of Han and Leia in Cloud City became tedious and repetitive. There's an over reliance on slow motion, Tarantino uses slow motion but this edit has it in a large abundance.

There is also an over reliance on music. The edit is almost filled end to end with musical cues. Much like the slow motion, there is a large abundance present and sometimes the music overpowers the dialogue being spoken. Dialogue is a very important part in Tarantino movies and rarely uses musical cues during those scene and if he does they appear near the end for dramatic effect.

From a narrative aspect, the story is told in a non-linear fashion similar to Tarantino's style. However, during the final act there is a flashback to the Cave of Evil where Luke chops Vader's head off revealing his own head in the helmet, which doesn't make any sense. During the actual scene in the movie that scene was replaced by an animated segment from the original Clone Wars cartoon. So having a flashback to a scene that never took place was confusing.

All that being said, I still thoroughly enjoy this edit. The Luke and Yoda scenes are very enjoyable and are perfectly scored, even the training montage. The Vader introduction is masterly executed and the final fight is a joy to watch. I would recommend it to anyone who likes Tarantino movies, likes Star Wars, or is just looking for something that is fresh and unique. The sound overpowering the dialogue is why I gave the audio editing a 9 and the flashback is why I gave the narrative a 9.

HIGHLY RECOMMEND

BRAVO!

Just watched it. I actually applauded at the end of Battle Royale. I applauded. In my own lounge. On my own. Yes, it was that good.
Nit-picks: The animated scene was a stretch, and then the call back to the cave in the Battle Royale didn't work (seemed pretty random). Probably would have been better to segue the animation into the entrance of Vader in the Cave. Or use the footage of Anakin vs ObiWan, instead of the animation?
I also found the immersion was ruined by leaving in the Star Wars music cues with the mynoks (or whatever they're called) in the Space Worm. It pulled me out of the Tarantino experience.

Genius to use Empire, by far the strongest film, and genius to use the flashbacks etc., character intros, oh man, this was creative brilliance. Up there with War of the Stars.
:applause!:

Thank you for the great review dangermouse! I'm going to have to go back and check that Mynock section now, I was pretty sure I had removed all the original music cues, but perhaps I missed one! As for the animation, my intention was to imply Luke was having a vision of his father at a crucial moment when he started to use the dark side. The flashback during the final battle was intended as another vision, this time showing Luke inside the helmet, suggesting he is closer than ever to following his father's path if he is not careful. But regardless, I'm really pleased you enjoyed many of the choices made and had a good time watching :)
