Brief Synopsis:
By removing the love triangle this turns out to be a great action and war movie about a day the US will never forget.
Intention:
ADM's Pearl Harbor: Strength and Honor is one of my favorite fanedits but, due to age and availability of source material, has always been trapped as an SD edit with stereo sound. This edit faithfully recreates the original using a higher quality source.
Additional Notes:
This is AdigitalMan's edit of Pearl Harbor faithfully reconstructed using an updated HD source of the director's cut of the film. All editing decisions belong to the original editor. Spence only recreated the edit exactly to create a more up to date version of this great project.

HBO had the Pearl Harbor Director's Cut showing and streaming in HD a while ago, the only time this version of the movie has ever played in HD. As one of the bigger fans of this movie (It's good! The romance works! The action is great! etc.) I preserved a copy of it for myself. Using this newly available HD version of the Director's Cut, I have completely and faithfully recreated ADM's edit but in HD, with 5.1 sound. This obviously isn't going to be Blu-ray quality, but it's leagues better than what came before in terms of picture and sound fidelity.

I used the original edit as a guide and recreated it as faithfully as I possibly could. I didn't make any changes or use any personal input. This is cut for cut the same edit ADM made, but brought forward into the world of HD edits. It's literally exactly the same length as the old one.

So, not really a "Spence Edit" but a tribute to one of my favorite fanedits by one of the founding fathers of fanediting.

I remember seeing this in the theaters when it came out and leaving 3 hours dumber. This edit is a fantastic example of trimming the fat and leaving something worth watching!

While I am fully aware that the goal was to recreate the original edit piece by piece, I think that some very small changes could have fixed parts of the narrative (especially some of the more cringe-worthy parts). For example by the time Ben Affleck crashes in the ocean, we barely know him or his relationship to Josh Hartnett, so there is zero emotional punch to his "death" and resurrection. This could have very easily been removed with no effect on the film that I can see.

Judging the edit on its story and choices, I think it deserves the 8 on narrative. Judging Spence's work as an editor, it's a 10/10. Impressive as always.

Thanks for the review! As you mentioned, the goal was to simply recreate a classic edit exactly, in HD. If this were "my edit" I would certainly have considered what you're suggesting. Maybe someday!

From the early days of this site, it seems to me that a lot of the classic fanedit bangers belonged to ADigitalMan. Unfortunately, many of those early edits did not have the quality of A/V that we would want today, and many have slipped into obscurity and unavailability. His version of Pearl Harbor for example is one that I had been searching for literally since I joined the site. I'm actually a fan of the original film, but the premise of dropping out romantic elements to focus on the brotherhood of the pilots seemed like a great idea. So I'm beyond pleased to see that Spence has faithfully recreated this edit, and that yes, it works just as well as I'd hoped!

In terms of the A/V quality, I know I don't have the highest quality setup, but even the small file size was great for me. I caught one stray frame at about 1h19m and a slight audio interruption at about 1h38m, but other than that this is a flawless edit that you'd never know had any cuts unless you'd heard the original story. There are some "hanging chads" if you will of the romantic angle, like some moments between Rafe and Danny that can be interpreted as personal tension when there doesn't seem to be any cause, or Danny writing to this nurse back in Pearl Harbor who he only seemed to have a mild flirtation with. But these can also be brushed off as simply the tension of the situation or as background-building for the characters -- nothing you need to flesh out or spend time on in a movie so large and busy.

In short, for those who'd never seen the original film, this is hands-down the way to watch. You'll be shocked to find that it initially had a mixed reception, as the version here is powerful and moving and fast-paced, coming in at just over 2 hours. For those who found the original uneven in tone and a bit overlong, there is every reason to give it a second chance with this cut. It seems almost impossible to just completely remove the romance from the film, but that's basically what's happened here, and it works amazingly well. Thanks to Spence for making available the perfect edit for a Memorial Day weekend watch!

This is a very enjoyable edit compared to the original theatrical release. The fast paced war scenes all came together extremely well. I can understand why Spence redid the edit. Much appreciated and very well done.

A fantastic recreation of a fanedit that improved the original. Makes you wonder why Bay didn't edit the film like this.

A loving and faithful recreation of A Digital Man's fan edit in HD!

Since this is a rebuild of the original fan edit, some of the original weaknesses remain.
The removal of the Love Triangle works 99%, but there are a few sequences that now play awkward such as Rafe and Danny's bar reunion, the lovelorn looks while giving blood and Danny writing a love letter to Evelyn.

But if you crave non-stop action and John Wayne style patriotism, you can not do better than this fan edit!

Recommended! :)
