This is a recreation of the rarely seen "Theatrical Cut" or "2nd Director's Cut" of 'Heaven's Gate' using the beautiful HD Blu-Ray transfer of the "Preview/Premiere/1st Director's Cut". The much shorter cut is not a studio-imposed hatchet-job but the result of 6 months of Director Michael Cimino's further work in the cutting room, trying to perfect the film. It's 67 minutes shorter, features a voiceover, radically rearranged scenes, altered dialogue, music and SoundFX and 18 minutes of new footage.
For whatever reason he did not chose to restore this cut of the film for Blu-Ray and opted to present his first much longer cut that he himself had withdrawn. So here is my attempt to recreate that "2nd Director's Cut" in the best quality possible.

Intention:
Using the low-quality French DVD 'La Porte Du Paradis' (Which appears to be the only copy of the 2ndDC available) as a guide, I've conformed the Blu-Ray transfer frame-by-frame and cut-by-cut to match. The unique soundtrack of the 2ndDC is preserved, but any colour-timing differences have not been (The transfer was too faded and murky to judge what the colours may or may not have been). Instead I have re-graded any shots I've used from the DVD, to match the Blu-Ray footage which makes up around 90% of this edit.
Additional Notes:
Be aware that while I have used sharpening, film-grain, contrast adjustment and various other tools to improve matters. The unique 2ndDC footage is of a much lower quality than the Blu-Ray source so will be noticeable to some extent. Given this fact I have tried to use every frame I could of the HD source, sometimes even breaking a shot up into seperate layers and blending them together.
UPDATE: This cut is now available in HD on a German blu-ray release, as a bonus feature. So I won't be sharing this edit any longer, you can just go buy a copy.

Despite my best efforts and the fascinating extras, I've never been able to make it all the way through my Criterion edition of this film, so I'm grateful to TMY2C for giving me an alternate but equally official way to enjoy this historical epic. Great work all around, this should have been a second disc on the Criterion edition, frankly. This is a flawless restoration and shows off the expansive but tight story that this movie could have been/should have been/almost was from the beginning. Fun and filled with powerful moments and excellent performances.
Now if you'll excuse me, after that, I have to try and track down a good edit of The Deer Hunter...

This is a film which in any form (to date) defys conventional reviewing.
All of the versions have an Altman like quality to them, namely a meandering through the chapters of people's lives swept up in the maelstrom of events around them and between them.
Plot elements come and go, but the visuals, acting, set design and landscapes remain.
So is this good? Well, since it is a recreation of what the director originally put out, I must judge it by that standard. TM2YC is not undertaking a creative endeavor or fix here but a "restoration". On that basis, and that alone I can and do give it 10s across the board. If this were an edit of a version that does not exist, it would still score high on technicals, but of course, less on narrative and enjoyment but that is inherent to the material available.
Nevertheless, this is a masterful piece of assembly and gem to have so been preserved.
A big salute to you Sir ! (or Ms.)

I have only watched the original Heaven's Gate (well the edition to hit UK cinemas last year) and as much as I could argue the basic story and overall pace of the film leaves a lot to be desired, I do really enjoy it.
I am astounded that you have taken so much time and effort to recreate this particular vision of the film, and more astounded that no-one else has commented on it here (although this is my first ever posting to this forum) I'm not sure how many views it actually gets.
With regards to the new edit, I can see how more of it works, the dialogue between Jim and the Irish Station Master (i.e where the whole premise of the movie is first told) is clear although it felt a little like the dialogue was re-recorded in a studio? I thought the cut from the town to the butler was a little too abrupt and the battle seemed much shorter somehow? I missed the sepia toning on the roller skate sequence also.
There is so much about this movie I would change, if I had your skill and patience. Much of the Harvard stuff is unnecessary as we don't really get the feeling of the great 'end of an era' that we should and I still don't think Averill is a strong character, I don't really care about him. Whereas the Association head (Canton?) comes across much stronger and purposeful. Also, for all of the effort put into the sets, I don't think we see enough of the main town - considering how much is spent in Ella's bedroom (although she is a honey)
Here in lies my question, I wonder if you would consider your OWN edit of this movie - creating an even tighter storyline? Second to Cimino himself, you probably know more about the intricacies of this movie than anyone alive.
All in all a phenomenal achievement by yourself, but it is a better film that the original cut? I'm really not sure - could you make one I wonder?!
