Quick review:
TM2YC is a talented chap and very helpful to boot and he has taken this hit and miss movie which was a relative flop at the time and critically under rated until it had a sufficient cult following due mainly to home cinema and mr Depp enduring popularity.

In this far gritter non-official reprisal version of his role from the excellent but equally 'loose' Sleepy Hollow, Mr Depp detects (stumbles) his way through Victorian London, falling over countless mutilated bodies and with the most improbably Jack Sparrow precursor of an English accent committed to film.

The original edit was a bit of a mess and much derided by fans of the source material and film goers and critics alike with had multiple reshoots , endings and cut scenes i.e. all the usual paraphernalia associated with a troubled shoot +even worse test screenings.

how does the edit stand up!?
Well obviously it's excellent due to the 2 editors (old and new lol) , as much as it can be with what there is to work with and saying that the overall effect is good, very good in its own 'interesting, macabre way' but the movie has inherent flaws which all the editing in the world cannot correct.

What I did like:
The film now works lol (that's really all you need to hear so move along).
It is more focussed and coherent and settles into its tone and sticks with it.
The film is much darker to the point of being bleak and nihilistic....it is gritty and almost documentary like and this makes a fascinating slice of history in a very DEADWOOD style of authenticity.
The film is black and white and plays like one of the films characters, the elephant man aka Mr J Merrick which was an easy call but a sensible and brave one none the less as not only is it nearer to the source but it is nearer to the time period lol and helps with all that work print footage!
The ending he has chosen is real nasty which lends an air of authenticity and shock and far removed from the garbage currently being force fed to us from hollywood lately, so it is a refreshing change.
As the film is a little slow though not nec. boring!!! it still meanders in the middle though but this ending was necessary to pick up the pace for the 3rd act, whilst the happy ending original had us all snoozing before the credits rolled.

What I did not care for:
not much but maybe the film in general lol I mean that the film is good but not great and this is the directors fault and Depps and Graham who both sleep walk through the movie with their atrocious accents (I am a brit and I also lived in Victorian britan lol no just the former). Fortunately the edit has significantly improved upon the original release.
I did not like the inclusion of the Queen in the middle as it was clearly stock or work or a first take and jarred horribly but I see the need for it to keep the royal connection (though it was nicely edited in).
I think the film could be slimmed down significantly but then it would not be a fan edit as I found this version to be like the LOTR extended which is heaven for fans.
The opening credits had two knife scenes back to back which were a little confusing and maybe the 2nd one could have been lost which would get us to Depp quicker as the story really only starts with the protagonist starts to investigate and I guess I think it drags to a point but again that is the fan aspect of it and certainly the slice of horrific life in Britain at that time is fascinating in the sheer detail shoved into every shot.
The final credits songs were not to my liking and not in keeping with the film we had just seen (even if there is significance for those songs they do not work at all in my opinion).

That is it really......nothing really to moan about which can be attributed to the editor.
The question is did he take a diamond in the rough and make it shine or polish a turd lol which is entirely your own decision but I personally found it very enjoyable and nearly flawless in execution.
Well done, go see this go to version of this film for now, 9/10 for editing (credit songs killed your 10) and 8/10 overall :D

I'll take my bow there shall I ;-)

That sums up exactly what I was aiming for... hurray!

Brilliant edit. The black and white conversion works like a gem. Reminded me of the gothic atmosphere of David Lynch's The Elephant Man. The original film couldn't figured out whether it was a thriller, a satire or a supernatural flick. TM2YC has given this film a solid personality. Now we can indulge in all the darkness, the innate evil characters and the social satire without the distractions. The removal of the lighter storylines and the inclusion of the darker deleted scenes results in a more focused film. Highly recommended.

I stated my intention in the FH thread that I wanted it to look as much like Lynch's 'Elephant Man' as possible. So sounds like I suceeded... hussah!

The original From Hell had the unenviable task of trying to adapt an Alan Moore story...no easy task at the best of times, and even worse to boil down 9 years of publications filled with liner notes and easter eggs. Like a mad genius or an obsessive savant - or likely a combination of the two - Moore had imagined the interwoven lives of a couple dozen individuals and how it lead to an infamous series of murders that can only be called conspiracy of the highest order. The film script attempts to preserve the lyricism and detail of Moore's work while also giving a less-cerebral audience some emotional investment and entertainment value. It's safe to say that the filmmakers managed only mixed results at this probably-impossible task.

TM2YC tries here to give us a film version closer to Moore's original work, and in that I think he succeeds. As written in the notes, the material available simply doesn't allow a truly accurate rendition of the graphic novel, but what's here is certainly closer. The look of the film is jet black like the comics, and the tone is grim and dry. I'd say that (as written in the notes) the visual quality of the film does suffer somewhat from this conversion, and that does make some of the scenes seem a bit too visually-extreme for me (demonic eyes, for example). I also remember spending much of the film on first watch just trying to figure out what the hell was happening. Here, the narrative is streamlined and, I thought, almost telegraphed from the start. It'd be ideal for a first-time viewing, less-interesting on a re-watch.

All that said, I don't think this actually makes it much BETTER of a movie than the theatrical cut. This is the problem with adaptations... a more accurate one isn't necessarily better for the new medium. The film as-is still retains all kinds of bits and bobs that weave an amazing tapestry in the graphic novel but just seem incredibly contrived and half-baked in the movie. The romance is still undercooked and honestly comes almost out of nowhere here, and our detective has had his character gutted and so we have little emotional attachment to him. The "alternative" ending for me was better, as it paid off the sudden introduction of a new prostitute, and it gave some satisfaction for the only character that really had an arc: Mary Kelly. However, the film as a whole is quite straightforward and uninvolving in this form. It's not a work of suspense, and there's not really enough horror...it's a mystery more than anything, but not one with clues that a viewer could logically work out unless they have a lot of previous knowledge.

I think my preferred edit of the film would be more radical, lots of cutting, rescoring, maybe playing with flashbacks during investigations. I don't honestly think a great adaptation of Moore's work is possible, so better to just make it a great movie of its own. That said, that's not the intention here, so I have to judge this on its own merits: which are plentiful. It's a well-executed and creative work that is indeed more faithful to the original material. If that's what you're looking for, you should definitely give this a watch.

An excellent effort. Although it'd be impossible to use the Hughes' film to center Sir William Gull as the protagonist of the film as with the book, this edit goes a long way to restoring the grit and terror of the Eddie Campbell artwork and toning down the de-saturated, dated early-00s colour grading. The relationship between Abberline and Kelly is downplayed but not completely eliminated, making it an emotional element of the film that does not overpower the societal critique that is the moral center of the book and (now, particularly) the film. (Incidentally, I highly recommend watching the documentary "Jack the Ripper: The Final Solution" for a bit more background on the Royalist Conspiracy JTR theory after viewing this wonderful fan edit. There are clips on the original DVD, but the whole film is available on YouTube.)

Until the (inevitable?) hours-long cable mini-series remake that puts Gull and his virulent misogyny and mystical bloodletting on display, this edit is a wonderful gift to diehard From Hell fans.
