It's no secret that the first season of Iron Fist was pretty lack luster. Thankfully Forbidden Marvels has masterfully polished this turd, trimming SO much unnecessary fat and creating a classic feeling yet totally unique installment in the MCU!
Opening with the plane crash before the MCU logo (perfectly set to some Outkast) sets up an intriguing backstory, with flashbacks throughout filling out character details with way less overt expositional dialog than the original series. This makes Danny a far more interesting (and intelligent) character, as he multiple times is able to deduce the influence of The Hand without being flat out told. However, the greatest dialog change by far is that Danny now only say "I am the Iron Fist!" ONCE! And it actually LANDS! (In the series he said it roughly 36 times over the course of 13 episodes) When he says it in this edit, it feels like Danny finally claiming the title of the immortal Iron Fist and the responsibility that comes with it, making his decision to return to Kun Lun in the end the result of a well executed character arc.
From an editing stand point, you'd hardly notice that this story had an episodic structure, as the transitions between scenes flow perfectly. Cutting down on the time Danny spends in the psych ward and removing Harold from this scene was a great choice, as was cutting any reference to the fact that they originally traveled to China for an entire episode! You'd never know that it wasn't just another Hand operated warehouse somewhere in NYC.
As a stand alone movie, Iron Fist and the Legend of the Hand is packed with some of the most brutal fight scenes in the MCU. It feels like a classic Marvel story while maintaining the dark, violent tone of the Defender's saga. I can't wait to see what Forbidden Marvels does with the character next!
