Brief Synopsis:
This edit transforms a feature-length slasher movie in a (mostly) sanitized 80's sitcom.
Intention:
I always thought PSYCHO II could make a great sitcom with only minor editing to remove the most "slashery" aspects of the film. The interactions between the characters, situations and settings all screamed "80's sitcom" to me. Aside from bringing the movie to more or less standard sitcom length, I re-did many sound effects and, with the help of other sources, re-edited some scenes to give them completely new meanings.
Additional Notes:
This week on "PSYCHO TOO!" After spending a few years away, Norman Bates comes home and finds work at a diner to make ends meet. His new flame Mary turns down the advances of local creep Mr Toomey. Norman learns that his overbearing Mother is coming for dinner tonight! He must put the house and motel in order before her arrival, all while proving to his nosy Mother-in-Law Mrs Loomis that he's a good man.
Other Sources:
- Psycho III (for establishing shots)
- Anthony Perkins performance of "Never Will I Marry" from Greenwillow
- Anthony Perkins Oatmeal cereal commercial

I was not familiar with Psycho II, but the concept of the edit sounded so wild that I felt like I had to make it my first experience.

EDITING
Generally, in terms of conveying the old-school TV vibe, this is excellent, but some of the re-framing did not work so well for me. Some shots are very obviously cropped from widescreen, with characters cut-off unnaturally or the subject of the shot being unclear. There's also one very odd shot where the aspect ratio has clearly been squashed and does not work at all.

Audio-wise, there are moments of the original film score lingering that don't suit the tone of the edit and could have been removed.

NARRATIVE
The shot of the note from Norman's "mother" is incredibly brief and is followed by a bunch of quick cuts. I don't know how it plays out in the original, but it felt rushed and a bit confusing. In general, that plot point is quite vague, but it more or less gets by.

ENJOYMENT
Outside of that though, the concept is really well delivered. The applied TV effects, degraded audio, canned laughter etc. are all really well placed. On some level I could tell this wasn't intended as a comedy, mainly from the acting, but there were also a lot of instances that were very cleverly tweaked to be humorous and had me laughing. Recommended.

I love Psycho II -- maybe more than the original (it's definitely more fun to watch), but Psycho Too is a delightful treat and does a great job of working lots of classic sitcom tropes and beats into the source material. I've watched it twice already and plan on watching it a third time later today.

I kind of want Butcher to create more of these -- any given Puppet Master or Chucky movie is only a hair away from being an episode of ALF or Small Wonder anyway... just a suggestion...

I don't know what I was expecting... but it was INCREDIBLE!!

The source material translates so well into the sitcom style. I will actually never be able to watch Psycho II again... this will always replace it for me now! I laughed out loud, and genuinely found this hilarious! This is the power of fan editing at its finest, taking something from another genre and making it something completely different!

If you want to watch something that turns the source on its head, definitely watch this! its a must watch! 10/10

This was amazing. Well edited, the tone matched an 80s sitcom perfectly down to the applause breaks for character entry. I might be in the minority in thinking Psycho 2 was actually pretty fun for a horror flick, but this takes it and makes it something new.

The commercial break was incredible. Well done
