Brief Synopsis:
Set during the chronology of the first film, "Ticket Home" is a reflective look at the hijinks of the 4077 M.A.S.H. Unit as they partake in the United Nation lead Korean "Police Action".

The main difference between my edit and the original show is the pacing. The show had a very serialized pacing whereas the motion picture had an ebb and flow to it. I intended to make my MASH more like the film.
Intention:
What if instead of a TV show, FOX decided to make a second MASH movie? Using the vast amount of footage from the show, I attempted to recreate the feelings and pace of the original motion picture.
Other Sources:
Episodes used: "MASH" (pilot episode), "Yankee Doodle Doctor", "Dear Dad", "Showtime", "5 O'Clock Charlie", "Check up", "Bombed", "Aid Station", "Abyssinia, Henry"

Also used MASH (the motion picture).

This was an extremely fun fanedit! I've only watched a handful of original episodes and enjoyed them. This is a great primer for new viewers (buy the originals first!) and I believe it can be enjoyed by MASH fans.

I watched the DVD version, no editing issues I observed. Ken's commentary track was very informative and I enjoyed hearing his explanations for how he structured scenes and his ramblings about the show.

I was a huge fan of the TV series MASH. Moreso than the movie, in fact.
I thought the look of this was wonderful. It really looked and felt like a movie, visually.
However, maybe I am too familiar with the source material, because it very much felt like I was watching a marathon of MASH episodes, back to back. This edit really makes the character of Major Hoolihan wishy-washy and more than a little slutty. That first season of MASH hadn't really developed her character yet, and it really shows in this fanedit.
I was surprised by how unfunny Hawkeye and Trapper were during most of the 5 o'clock Charlie portions. This felt very episodic, which makes perfect sense considering the source(s).
I still would recommend it to anyone who loves MASH, because it is great to see these characters again, and the look is very cinematic.
And maybe the original MASH movie doesn't have the clearest of narratives either, as Altman films sometimes ramble. I wonder of a tighter edit could have been made using Yankee Doodle Doctor as more of the thru-line? I keep picturing Hawkeye's big serious scene as a possible ending, following a fade to black from Radar delivering the news of Henry's death?
I have never done a fanedit myself, so truly, I've no idea what I am talking about on some level.
Overall, I do recommend it and I hope people check it out!

M.A.S.H is one of those shows that lends itself well to creative editing, with it's loose sequence of comical set-peices, assortment of endearing characters going through more than one personal stroy, and heartfelt commentary on the ramifications and landscape of conflict, it's a recepie for inspired exeperimentation. This edit flows very smoothly, with some of the most inspirational moments of the show's early years being highlighted throughout. I probably would have ended the edit with the end of the movie reel with Hawkeye talking about war not being anything like a movie, but I'll take what we got as it still remains a powerful memory for all M.A.S.H and television fans in general. A great mash-up and a fitting celebration of the cream of the 4077 crop.

This one brought back lots of great memories for me. This was my first "grown up" tv show I remember watching. Yes, it was a comedy, and many of the subtleties were lost of me at the age of five, but even at that young age I sensed the underlying message about the futility of war. You knew you were watching something different, something dramatic and important. And now, all these decades later, I look back at MASH as one of the true great series in the history of television.

This firstling fan edit wonderfully captures the spirit and power of those early (and in my opinion, best) seasons of the show. The characters are rich and immediately engaging. The loose narrative works really well, it has an Altman feel and structure much like the original movie that inspired it. And even though I knew how it must end, I still felt surprised and choked up when the story came to close. Very well done.

The video upscale from 4X3 to 16x9, looks very look overall, none of scenes felt too zoomed in or chopped off. There is some quality differences between different episodes. Also, there is a very significant video quality difference during the new opening credits with the cuts to the incoming helicopters that I found a bit distracting as I believe these are from the feature film and I am surprised at how degraded they looked. But most tv shows through the 70s and 80s used poor quality stock footage for shots, so I guess it fits with the edit.

I did find it distracting that the editor choose to put "Do Not Distribute" warning right in the middle of the opening credits, instead of before the main feature.

Majority of the cuts worked for me, I did not notice any flash frames or significant transition issues. Though I did notice a continuity issue right away.... In the beginning Hawkeye is wearing his blue Hawaiian shirt, he is still wearing it when the copters arrive and when he is evaluating the incoming wounded at the top of the landing hill, but when he gets to bottom of the hill he is in army greens. Not a big deal, but it is one of the challenges of doing a multi-episode edit that editors need to keep an eye on. The end credits, also come to a very abrupt end, no gentle fade out of music or video.... it just stops.

Audio is for the most part good. I loved the use of the original them song. Though the instrumental version that is used for a scene transition at 1hr6min, while dramatically powerful, was too loud for my tastes. Also, there were a couple of scenes in the MP4 version I watched where the audio went out sync for a minute or two, for example at 31minutes where Radar gives Trap the bad news.

All in all, a good firstling edit. The world of Hawkeye, Trapper and Colonel Blake is as entertaining today as it was 40 years ago and this edit really does shine a light on some of the series best moments while telling a fresh narrative.

Thumbs Up.

This is a great edit for all MASH fans, especially those who loved the 'Henry Era'. Many of the classic moments from these episodes are sewn together into a loose but thematically interesting narrative across Henry's time with the 4077. It has all the great character moments, the biting mix of satire, drama and screwball comedy, and finds its own rhythm in and around the operating table scenes.

Well done on a unique and enjoyable edit!
