Brief Synopsis:
After uncovering a mysterious artifact buried beneath the Lunar surface, a spacecraft is sent to Jupiter to find its origins - a spacecraft manned by two men and the supercomputer H.A.L. 9000.

Evoking the emotions of the original, this tackles shot lengths and pacing and highlights H.A.L.'s motivations for a more approachable version of the film.

New watchers of the film should find this more approachable. Thank you for considering...The Short Cut.
Intention:
As a lover of the film, 2001 is challenging to introduce to new audiences. I wanted a way to show the amazing story without the overhead of 1968 editing technology influencing shot length.
Release Information:

Editing Details:
Shortening the film using only existing sounds proved challenging mostly for sound reasons. Much of the film is scored, with score, sound effects, and dialogue all intermixed. So particular care was taken to use sound and music in creative ways in the new shot construction.
Cuts and Additions:
* deeply shortening the prehistory sequence. (The book is concise here.)
* shortening and in some cases removing the multiple montage docking sequences
* cutting back to dramatic tension elements at key moments (monolith in the prehistory sequence, H.A.L. later)
* changing the timewarp / ending order considerably
* trims throughout
* no added CGI, and no added sounds

I really enjoyed this cut! It's been quite a while since I saw the original, but I've seen the original about a dozen times. One of the things that you very much improved was the flow of the narrative. The original is much like a ballet, where the feeling of the story is also an equal part of the story. Here it seems as though you sought to tell a tiger story at the slight expense of some visual dancing.

I won't say every cut was perfect (in particular I noticed a seemingly unnecessary harsh cut during the airlock explosion scene, where in the original it was a smooth fade). I did however really enjoy your take on the star gate scene, that even as he ages in The Room he's still travelling in the gate.

Overall this was very enjoyable! I can't say it will replace the original for me (maybe if it was 30 mins shorter it would make a great piece for quick viewings) but I had a great time watching it!

This is a hard one to evaluate, because I really love the original film. It’s a classic, one of the best films of all time and Stanley Kubrick is a genius…

But I have to say, great job on part of @holyalamo. The cuts are perfect, the quality is flawless.

The prologue sequence in particular is well made, it was a bit too long in the original. As were the docking sequences; they were very impressive in 1968, but way too dragged and over the top in modern times.

The changes in the ending are up to each viewer, because here we have @holyalamo’s interpretation. And that’s fine; it’s a slightly different view from the original.

Overall, great work and flawless technique, congrats!

The edits where well made and I did not notice a difference in terms of picture and sound quality compared to the original. However, I feel that, in order for this edit to called "The Short Cut", it should've been trimmed down a lot more. For new audiences, this will still painfully slow. I think this edit could be edited down to 70-80 minutes and drastically improve.

I must confess, I failed to pick up on the majority of the cutscenes / sequences.
The sound editing was very good, no jarring jumps etc. I really noticed just how much the sound track, enhanced the film.
The visuals were very good, again flowed seamlessly.
thank you very much.

From a modern perspective 2001: A Space Odyssey is probably in need of a good trim, the then-revolutionary visual and model effects sequences in particular having the potential to test audience patience (e.g. the moon landing platform descent). I personally am rather fond of the film and so found myself missing certain parts (e.g. the famous match-cut and staggered zoom) even if they are inconsequential, but from a narrative standpoint there is nothing to complain about and many of the cuts made to speed up proceedings are hardly or never noticeable.

The one section that I much prefer in the original is the Stargate sequence, the visuals in my opinion need time to breath (albeit maybe not the full near-ten minutes) and the flashback inserts to it during hotel room scene felt unneeded. I haven't got the original to hand for comparison, but it seems that a couple of times footage has been speeded up and this feels a little out of place.

In all quite an ambitious first edit, well done holyalamo!
