Brief Synopsis:
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 in its purest form. No subplot about Peter uncovering his parents' disappearance. No impending plane crash abruptly interjected into the final showdown to instill a false sense of real-world consequence. No meandering scenes that only serve to distract from the overall narrative the film seeks to tell. This, coupled with the addition of deleted scenes to help keep the plot moving along at a healthy pace, creates the sequel that viewers both expected and deserved back when it released in 2014.
Intention:
To reveal the true potential this film had as a successor to 2012's 'The Amazing Spider-Man', had it not been bogged down by endless clutter and blatant sequel-bait in an attempt to establish Sony's own cinematic universe. This Fan Edit aims to remedy the issues mentioned above while still producing a more streamlined and tonally consistent experience.

Wow.

That pretty much sums it up.

After viewing Masirims017's extended cut of The Amazing Spider-Man 1 (which I highly recommend), I was hungry for a superior version of the sequel, arguably the worst Spidey film to date.

I was not disappointed. I do want to say, however, that the film is still far from perfect. If you are looking for a total fix of the film, I doubt such a version exists. But this version of the movie is still just so much better than the theatrical version.

The edits that were made were seamless. There was never a point in the movie where I was like, "That was a sloppy cut." Having seen the theatrical version a couple times, I did notice at some points of the movie that things had happened in the theatrical edition that were not here (ie. the plane scene at the beginning), but everything here was so well constructed. My only gripe is that in the middle of the film we get a lot of Harry Osborn content with no Peter for around twenty minutes. You'd think in another cut we'd get some Spidey action in there, but there was nothing to work with. It was a little jarring for Peter to reappear, but it was still done well. This is not at the fault of the editor, but rather I applaud them for it: they wove the deleted scenes to get Peter back into the story.

No more plane crash. No more "mystery" of the Parker parents. No more Rhino cliffhanger at the end. Instead, Peter gets his suit out and gets back up. A superior ending in my opinion. Love it. There's still the issue of Max/Electro and his motivations, but that's Sony's fault.

SPOILER ALERT!!!!!! The death of Gwen hit so hard here. There was a lot less to distract from Peter and Gwen's relationship. I usually cry a lot in movies. I didn't cry in the original version of TASM2. Even knowing what was coming, I cried like a baby. The emotions of the film were able to shine in this cut, which created a better story.

As previously stated, this is still far from perfect. But it's definitely the best version of the film. This will be replacing the theatrical cut in my library.

This was, dare I say it, an amazing edit.

I did not like the cinematic version too much. Max Dillon (Electro) was not a very compelling character before he got his powers, and came complete with an annoying signature tune: he was very cartoonish, jarring with the darker mood of the rest of the film. The whole subplot with the secrets of Peter Parker's parents bloated the film, and was not especially interesting (the two are ciphers in the comics, with Peter's family really being his aunt and uncle), essential to the plot (linking absolutely everything including the kitchen sink to the machinations of Norman Osborne and/ or Oscorp is neither needed nor a very promising thread) and it never provided a pay-off (in terms of character development, stage-setting for a sequel, motivations, etc.). The core story, around friendship, betrayal, the costs of being a hero, the price of making moral choices, sacrifice and the issue of whether ends justify any means (as Harry and Norman Osborne, Oscorp, Electro all clearly reckon), all taking us into the usual guilt-ridden-but-truly-heroic territory of Spider-man, got lost.

With this edit, deleting the mystery that never was and which no one anywhere ever showed any interest having solved (the fate of the Parker parents), adding in some deleted scenes (that really do help develop the story), removing some other stuff (Rhino at the end, for example) and having a focus on a the big issues helped Max/ Electro stand out in clearer relief , and the basic viciousness of Harry to shine through, and enabled the tragedy of Gwen to hit like a hammer blow. It becomes a genuinely powerful and moving story .

I would have probably left out the Ravencroft stuff at the end as it is not very useful (do we really need to know what happened to Harry, or that he has a mysterious helper and access to a Rhino suit?) and does not fit so well with the other stuff going on at the time (mourning, despair, rebirth). But its not biggie, and I have nothing but respect for the masterful job the editor did overall.

So: a great, great fanedit that makes an okay-ish film really, really (here I go again) amazing.

Not much to say. The edit did exactly as promised, reworked TASM2 into a much more cohesive story and gave more closure to the ASM storyline. I watched this a while ago so I can't point out specifics, but I do recommend that people who are at all interested in TASM watch this cut. There were a few audio issues present, but nothing catastrophic.
