Brief Synopsis:
There and Back Again is a fan edit of the Hobbit Trilogy that aims to tell the story in a single film. The bloat of the original movies is excised to create a more concise and exciting experience.
Intention:
The Hobbit Trilogy always felt like a great film stretched into three. My edit aims to find that diamond (or Arkenstone) in the rough, and make the great parts shine brighter.

Editing Details:
The main goal of mine was to create a single cohesive film. Book accuracy was not a really considered. My biggest priority was keeping the story well paced and focused.
From a technical perspective most of the cuts are fairly straightforward, while making use of the 5.1 surround sound audio from the Hobbit blu-rays to isolate the sound effects or music for some scenes. I made use of some effects shots made by eric1894, particularly the shot of the eagles flying in to the battle with Radagast removed and the shots of the barrels without arrows. I also digitally added some dwarves to a shot of the company walking to the Lonely Mountain. Originally there were 10 but I duplicated some to give the illusion that 14 were there.
I also used the AI Splitter found here: https://vocalremover.org/splitter-ai. This was used to remove music completely from a scene and just get the dialogue/sound effects. This was very useful for removing the music from the clip of the smoke ring bursting at the start of the film.

Cuts and Additions:
There are two versions of my edit, an extended and theatrical edition. The main difference is that the theatrical version removes some extra scenes that don't really contribute that much to the story. The extended cut is about 30 mins longer than the theatrical. The changes outlined below apply to both versions of the edit.
Subplots that do not impact the main story have been removed or minimized. These include Gandalf's investigation into Dol Guldur, Tauriel and Kili's love story, Bilbo's growing corruption from the ring, and Azog's feud with Thorin (which has been modified to be Azog seeking revenge for the death of the Great Goblin). Obviously any scenes of those storylines are removed, but also some lines that foreshadow those storylines are removed as well. Bilbo is the central character of this edit, and so his storyline is given main focus.
Some major set pieces that remain in the main storyline have been either removed or modified.
Beorn chasing the company and the dwarves fighting Smaug have been removed, due to their presence being unnecessary and them happening either in between or right after multiple other action scenes, so they have been removed so that it doesn't feel like an over abundance of action.
The main chase through Goblin Town has been removed, due to the scale of the scene not fitting with it being so early in the movie.
Thorin charging out against Azog was removed for a similar reason, it felt too climactic for an action scene so early in the film.
Some silly moments from the fight with the spiders have been removed, along with Bilbo killing the baby spider.
The orcs and elves have been removed from the barrel sequence, the scene is now just the dwarves sailing down the rapid river.
Bilbo's conversation with Smaug is shortened, the original tends to drag-on (pun intended) a bit.
Smaug's attack on Laketown is shortened to remove the left behind dwarves, along with Bard killing Smaug with a normal arrow.
The Battle of Five Armies is shortened to remove the goofy moments, and keep it from feeling too overindulgent.
Other smaller changes are made, either to improve the pacing of the film, or just because I didn't like what was originally there. These range from individual characters such as Alfrid's role being reduced, excessive Lord of the Rings references being removed, and some overly goofy moments being removed.

Seamless transitions and good audio. It's not much different than other edits of this film. Nonetheless, when it comes to edits of the Hobbit of this duration, this is the best one yet.
