Brief Synopsis:
The purpose of this edit was to remove all of the imagery of Earth 2 being in close proximity of Earth 1 and to otherwise remove scientific implausibilities throughout the film. A mystery component was added to the film by removing the opening scenes. Bad acting was trimmed, VOs were removed and a new, less troublesome, ending was provided.
Intention:
Another Earth is, by all accounts, a fine sci-fi movie. However, as the film played heavy to the visual metaphors, without staying true to its sci-fi foundation, the movie strayed too far into the illogical. This edit is my attempt to make the film more "believable" within the confines of its premise.

The original of this movie was a good movie and delivered a very human and emotionally motivated movie (a common trait of movies involving Brit Marling). The original movie I would hesitate on calling great however, mostly because the movie is so quickly laid out at the beginning that it can feel like it drags slightly in the middle where the story and the characters do not develop as fast (also a common trait of movies involving Brit Marling, I think). I feel this fan edit mostly affects this aspect of the movie and is mostly an improvement as a result.

This edit incrementally develops the plot within the movie, keeping interest and intrigue throughout it until the end. I also feel this heightens the cathartic effect at the culmination of the film - catharsis being something I personally value in a movie to great limits.

To say the edit keeps intrigue throughout the movie isn't intended to make you think it makes it needlessly complicated or conceptual however. The original movie had its meaning and subject matter quite out in the open (funnily enough, it is *literally* spelled out within the movie), and this edit doesn't remove anything that detracts from that clear understanding allowed in the first place. In fact I think it had mostly removed parts that didn't pertain to the notion of forgiveness.

The only part I'm not sure on was (and this may get slightly SPOILERy from here on) the editor's addition of the voice-over at the beginning referencing forgiveness of the self - not only from another - and removal of an ending from the original film of her meeting her other self which I think implied a facing of oneself and forgiving oneself. I feel a small minute or two after the climax to address that could have been warranted but then I understand wanting to leave it at that high point. The scene may have been deemed unnecessary now that I think of it due the final shot of the protagonist and her general happiness. I may be nitpicking needlessly here. (end of /SPOILERy-ness).

I fear I may have gotten a bit pretentious there so I'll finish only by talking of objective quality in editing both in visuals and audio. I'll say that I never felt that I was watching an amateur edit. I never noticed any uncomfortable transitions or low quality sound effects. You have nothing to fear in this area.

Like the last reviewer, I wanted to see Another Earth when it was released but never got around to it. When Beezo released this edit, I chose to watch his version before the theatrical cut so that my first impressions of the movie would come from what I hoped would be the better of the two.

And whaddayaknow. . . I like Beezo's cut much better. The story remains coherent, overly obvious plot/emotional points get dropped into the dumpster, and the only appearance of Earth 2 appears to be in a dream sequence, which satisfies the science geek in me, which would be concerned about a heavenly body so close to Earth 1 fucking up our tides and crust integrity (and reciprocally, Earth 2's, too).

*Schpoiler alert*

I like that this edit is called Earth One, a thoughtful title choice. Its focus is on the characters and events of this planet, and I prefer Beezo's ending, which keeps things grounded, so to speak. The theatrical cut's ending is also interesting, but maybe because I saw Beezo's cut first, I find Beezo's ending a more natural place for the story to end and leaves more to the imagination. Beezo's ending also emphasizes better the theme of forgiveness and provides a bit more hope.

*End schpoiler*

One criticism: the mp4 file I viewed did not contain a commentary track, which could easily have been muxed in. Why should only the DVD and Blu-Ray viewers have all the fun? I would have liked to hear some fanediting insights but must resign myself to imagining (in Tom Servo's voice) why Beezo wants to open the space station airlocks.

Aside from that nitpick, I really enjoyed this fanedit of a really good movie. Because of edits like this, I want to continue, when possible, to see fanedits before cracking open the retail release, to see a better version first.

Enjoyjoy: 10 pelvic aerothrusts.

NOTE: I may have viewed the wrong version of this edit. Here on IFDB, "Earth One" is listed as 95 minutes long, but the version I have is only 75 minutes long. There is no other version of this edit that I can find, and the version I watched seemed like it wasn't missing anything (the file didn't seem corrupted and no scene appeared to be flat out gone). Also, IMDB lists the original film as 92 mins, and not 115 mins as listed here. I hope this is just an error on the website, and I'm not reviewing the wrong edit!

I saw the trailer for this film when it was first released and was immediately intrigued, but I just never saw it. When this edit was posted on IFDB, I decided to sit down and give myself a different experience by watching Beezo's "Earth One" before the original film. I was not disappointed. I stopped myself from reading the change-log as to not spoil myself for what was cut. The description only stated that all visuals of another planet being in our sky were cut. That choice alone really adds a mystery element to the film, and the edit actually plays more like a character-study/mystery than it does science fiction. Like I said, I'm unsure how the original film felt in terms of tone and themes, but this edit put the point across extremely well.

The first act of the film feeds you very little information about our main character, which really built the mystery as to why she wanted to help the composer who lost his family to a drunk driver. The end of the first act shows [SPOILER] Rhoda in her room, alone, convincing herself to tell the composer that "I did it." If there was ever a moment when Beezo doubted him/herself about how well the mystery element would play out between these two characters, I can attest to his/her editing capabilities. Just that small moment of Rhoda admitting to herself and the audience what she did was perfectly played out. I would call foul in breaking the show-don't-tell rule, but at the climax of the film, Beezo splices in short flashbacks of the indecent, mainly because the movie isn't about the incident, but the aftermath of it.

I'm rambling, only because this edit is one of the best I've seen in a while, so forgive me. The second and third acts play out well, but what really made this edit great was the end. [MORE SPOILERS] Choosing to end the film with Rhoda watching the interview of the composer with his ticket was the perfect way to close her journey. I was just floored. Then, I looked at Beezo's change-log and found out there was more after that, with something called a 'Rhoda 2 reveal'. Looking at that cut made me wonder how this film could have ended any differently, because the end of this edit is literally perfect. And the choice of removing all but two voice overs? Once again, a perfect cut.

I'd be interested to see the original cut of this film, but not for a while. This edit is borderline perfect. There were a few audio cuts that threw me off: The brother has some dialogue in the car that feels "starty-stopy", The room audio fading in over the score after Rhoda and John have sex sounds forced (the score could have just kept going and I wouldn't have noticed), and the first line of dialogue from John after Rhoda reveals her truth is clearly chopped out. That all being said, I highly recommend this edit to anyone and everyone. It's absolutely wonderful.
