Charlie and the Chop Chop Factory (Horror Version of Willy Wonka)

I watched this at Christmastime with all my extended family as we sat around in a post-present glow, everyone sipping on flavored coffee and having bits of fruitcake or cookies. I told them simply that some enterprising lad had trimmed up Willy Wonka a bit, and switched out the music. Of course, there were enough distractions going on that only one or two people really caught the tell-tale of the opening credit sequence, and most kept watching oblivious to the Horror that was to come...

This was my ideal viewing scenario, where the audience knows nothing of what to expect in the story, though of course this is too famous a film to expect people to have never watched the original. For much of the beginning, the family was just humoring me, kind of weirded out by the musical changes, not really getting yet that it was subverting the rosy hopefulness of the original film. I don't think it was until the first death that they truly got it. It happened so fast that my mom even missed that, and one sister insisted that I "rewind" it so that mom could witness the twist.

It was at this point that I think things started to click into place for the innocent viewers. Oh, that's why the new music often gives a sense of dread. Oh, that's why the picture looks a bit Texas Chainsaw Massacre. When the next impending death was approaching, savvier viewers started to anticipate it, wondering with glee how it would be handled. Veruca Salt in particular was a huge crowd pleaser, eliciting gasps from some, cackles of surprised glee from myself and others, and my sister nearly gasping for air, insisting I replay it three times. (This from an older lady who loves 1950s classic romances).

The whole affair is rather masterful, and I think I pulled off a near perfect viewing coup. My only quibble really is that both the edit and the narrative are a bit clunky in handling Charlie's departure. It's rather obvious when the original scene is faded out from, and even more obvious where it's re-inserted. "Why are they going back to that room?" one relative asked. I thought it was all rather unnecessary too, as it would've made a good fake-out in it's original position, a great set-up for the already extant perfect ending. Very little change is required from the theatrical ending to make it play out oh-so-very-differently. Of course, it requires having a killer who's as suicidal as they are homicidal, but that's pretty normal, tbh.

One final word about the highlight for me, which was the boat trip. The change in music combined with the surrealistic super-imposed background imagery made for a truly terrifying and unsettling sequence. What's great is that so many of the horrific elements of this film, and especially Roddenberry's performance, require so little alteration. Just a bit of recontextualizing, and suddenly our crew of main characters seems as oblivious as the typical teens in any slasher film. They should be running for the front door, not further inside. But what's even more satisfying here is that their individual sins keep them going further. As an audience, we rather feel they deserve their fates.

Whether or Horror fan or simply curious, I can say this is one of the most creative and fun edits I've yet come across on this site. Big thumbs up, and I recommend everyone give it a look.

Even before seeing any extraneous footage I was giggling away to myself. Just the hilarity innate in superimposing a gore-fest theme over the on the whole purely innocent and jovial screenplay. I got me good. Its the magnification of the happy holiday gone wrong angle most teen slasher movies tend to go with. Kind of off-putting the terror for the benefit of watchability. That approach does offer some homour and I think here it maxes out. Charlie is genuinely over the moon about his golden ticket. Chocolate is heaven.

Great mood amplification with the melancholy in the soundtrack. Innane party jingles mixed with insane game backers and the classic orchestral musicality of the original. I dont know. It was on point for supercharger subversiveness. And the additonal one minute - plus well executed interweaves of subtley suggestive images - does indeed live up to the promise of horror. Room for improvement, maybe. Krausfadr does the trick here for sure.

I'll add too that I appreciate the generally clear picture with a well measured amount of the degraded veneer. Grindhousers really need to move away from the idea that unclear pictures are cool. Dodgy projectors and dirty reels are cool. But if Drive-ins want to keep people from driving out they better at least get the focus right and use fresh bulbs.

Watched this on a discord watchparty with a few people, and everyone gave it 10/10. This was amazing from start to finish. Keep up the good work. I really don't have anything to criticize. Hilarious and enjoyable. Thanks for the work.

I liked the idea of this project as I already knew "Willy Wonka" had many horror elements such as the creepy tunnel scene and the creepy guy Charlie meets outside the factory. It definitely has those moments without the editor having to change them much at all. I think the scenes involving the "departures" of Verruca Salt and Mike Teevee were brilliantly done, although I wish Violet and Augustus had bigger "departures"....Violet surely needed to be blown up?! Maybe Verruca and Henry Salt should have ended up in the furnace as Willy Wonka alluded to?

I think the ending was great as I knew it would end with that scene, but I didn't know how you would do it and it turned out to be clever with how you changed it and the effort taken definitely paid off. As a small sidenote I would add that the transition into that scene is obviously a bit "choppy", but I understand there's not a lot of footage to play around with.

I actually preferred having very little of the original soundtrack. But I must admit, I wasn't too keen on the new soundtrack as I felt it could have been more dark and disturbing. There was the odd occasion where I couldn't hear Wonka saying things too. But on the other hand, it did look like you were making it more 70s to fit better with the film's era so I would understand that reasoning for that vibe.

I don't think making "Willy Wonka" into a horror was an easy task to do, even if it already had it's odd and disturbing moments. But it was a good idea nonetheless and you mostly made it work with what you had. Overall, it was definitely interesting.

This is a wild trip with a twist ending. Its a fun watch but wished it was longer. the change is the soundtrack was classic. Kinda wish it had an OST to this cut.
