Brief Synopsis:
This edit includes footage and voiceovers left out of the final release of this film, as well as a superior grade based on the first two cuts of the film.
Intention:
Terrence Malick's The New World has been released three times: as "The First Cut", "The Theatrical Cut", and "The Extended Cut". All three versions are available in the Criterion Collection. Although The Extended Cut is the most complete of the three cuts, it does omit some footage and voiceovers, largely from The First Cut, along with a small amount from The Theatrical Cut. Additionally, it uses a green-tinted grade, whilst the previous two cuts use a more natural grade.

The goal of this edit was to edit back in all the footage from the First and Theatrical Cuts that was left out of the Extended Cut, as well as replacing all duplicate footage from the Extended Cut with that of the previous two cuts due to the superior grading of the previous two cuts. The result was that 10 minutes of footage and a number of voiceovers were added into the film. Additionally, all of the Extended Cut footage that is duplicated in the previous two cuts favours the original grade, with 29 minutes of footage exclusive to the Extended Cut retaining its green-tinted grade. This means that the remaining 153 mins of this edit uses the original grade.
Release Information:
Digital
Editing Details:
All three cuts were loaded into the editor and compared using a split screen. Similarly, all three audio tracks were listened to simultaneously in order to spot differences between them. Posts from movie-censorship.com were used as references.
Cuts and Additions:
10 minutes of footage from the First Cut and Theatrical Cut added into the edit, made up of extended shots, additional shots, and additional scenes
All missing voiceovers and some sound effects from the First Cut and Theatrical Cut integrated into the edit
Soundtracks from all three cuts blended together. Audio levels adjusted occasionally for consistency
Footage from the First Cut and Theatrical Cut (which has the original grade), used to replace most of the Extended Cut's footage (which has the green-tinted grade)
A few frames were trimmed to allow for correct syncing of the video and audio tracks
